The white Xmas dream......

Post by Bormac »

Over here in Australia we never get to have a white xmas.

I have always wondered what it would be like to enjoy the traditional white xmas over in the USA.

What areas do you recommend for a great xmas experience.

I am on the north edge of lake ontario, and have only have a 50 /50 chance of snow on christmas. Id say hit some altitude in north western states.

Hit or miss in the central US. Some years 15" of snow, sometimes the grass still has green in it.

Why the US? Go Europe... French Alps, Switzerland, Austria, North of Italy, are your best bet :)

Come to Alberta, we have white Christmas every year. Personally, I don't think Christmas would be the same if I lived somewhere where snow never happened.

Not so, many many years we have had no snow on the ground from a week before to a week after christmas.

Mind you, I am three hours south of Edmonton. Plus temps, bright sunny day. Now thats a good christmas.

I agree soniccj5, the day after I can be done with all the snow. Being born and raised here it gets old after all these years.

An hour to the west of me is Banff, now there is were you would like to head for some snow.

Great suggestions.

Having two sons I have set my sights on a white xmas abroad some time in the future and I guess you might say I have Hollywood to blame for this desire.
I have little idea of what part of the country (USA or CANADA) I need to investigate but I am attracted to the small town kind of thing. Not so much interested in the big city stuff so NY (as awesome as it would be :D ) is out for now. Not looking for the ultimate big spend but rather the small town feel where people know one another and the classic xmas theme is big on the town agenda.

Are there such places or has Hollywood created an unrealistic dream for me?

the closest Ive experienced to that would be Owen Sound Ont, tons of snow, old streets, christmas & light displays etc. Not sure I would travel 1/2 way around the world for it though

I would say the same for Estes Park, Colorado - it's a very quaint little town, really feels like Christmas there, but there's not a whole lot of entertainment... You can explore Rocky Mountain National Park for a day, and maybe spend a day or so around the town - that's about it.

Not sure it's worth a trip from the other side of the world.

I'll give another vote for the states that comprise New England. You would have the best chance of snow on Christmas by choosing the northern portion like Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine.

The opportunity for my Australian family to enjoy a white Xmas would be awesome! I'm not much for big cities and a sleepy little town that gets into the festive spirit would be enough for us.
What seems ordinary to you guys is quite extraordinary to us.

Maybe I need to do a house swap with someone over there. That way a Canadian/American family could see what it's like to have a summer Xmas in Australia. It's certainly not all bad, I even have a good r/c collection to peruse through too ;-)
