Optima mid (runner)

Post by madmaxx »

Hey guys... i finally finished my Optima mid after a few months of work, i received my EzRun today witch makes it a step closer to running this buggy, i need some suggestions on a 2.2 wheel set for this buggy since i really don't want to run the stockers, here are some pics...

Nice Mid there mate :D I've got an EzRun combo in one my Mids and it goes well. If you can get hold of a set of Lazer ZX-R/ZX-RR rims & tyres they should work or possibly Lazer ZX-5 wheels.

Why not some Tamiya wheels, the buggy wheels in various guises are in abundance right now? Great looking Mid, lovely for a runner, which is my mode of thinking TBH, as id not want to run a scruffy chassis......this is just gorgeous.

i think i over did it with the brush-less set up... This thing is super fast, actually is uncontrollable after half throttle... and today i got super mad cuz it got out of control at high speed and flipped a few times roadrashing my brand new Optima mid wheels

I think you might kill it...though I could also be wrong .

11.1 v with 9t does seems like a lot to push through a buggy which is 20 years old and has
No slipper clutch.

I assume the ez run you also have there is sensorless based which can make matters less smooth.

a 3 cell lipo battery is way overkill for this application. Willing to bet it won't last long but if you dropped down to a smaller 2 cell lipo with less c rating it would make for alot smoother operation and easier to drive.

Gotta say I always wanted to try this for flat out speed runs with my mid and some tc tires

I agree with the previous comments madmaxx, you're gonna grenade that gearbox! In my Barney build, one guy was telling me I would be all but doing the same thing with an 11T Tacon motor, even on 7.4V LiPo, even with everything else I did to bulletproof it. I disagreed on that opinion but a 9T, no slipper, no major gearbox modding and 11V, I don't think that car will be running very long before something blows up.

It would be pretty exhilarating, for sure...but not for long! :D

If you only ran a 7.4V LiPo, and adjusted the punch to minimum, you'd maybe be okay.

Check this out guys... a friend lend me a gps so i could clock the Optima Mid, well.. i did two warm up passes and was around 30-35 mph not hitting full throttle... so decided it was time for a full blast run.. got the car up to some speed and pushed the trigger all the way full... looked awesome... almost on a wheelie all the way but lost control and i hit a patch of grass and got airborne, flew for about 15 feet till it stopped with a tire of my parked car... went to see the damage and the gps said 49mph and it was still accelerating when i lost control, the Optima has some extensive damage... bent chassis, bent shock towers, rear wing broke of gear box, steering linkage... but it was FUN!!! i took of all the electronics since it will be a while before i fix it, here is a pic right after the crash...

Well, as long as you had fun...your Mid's gonna live up to your forum nickname and look like a Road Warrior car before too long if you continue running it at 11.1V on a 9T motor. :P

I estimated my ordinary Zebra Optima with 14T brushed motor, 10T pinion gear and 8.4V NiMH battery was pushing over 35 mph (according to a speed estimator I found online based on gear ratios, tire diameters, motor RPM & voltage) and honestly, other than going back and forth in a straight line on my street, it wasn't really much fun. If the car's not controllable while turning and navigating obstacles, it's just plain too fast. :)

i totally agree with you mark, that's the last time i will run that car like that... its just not designed for that much speed... but i wish i had a vid of it taking a curve at that speed... it just looks awesome... you guys know i love Optimas and seeing one hit 50 mph and still have some juice in it... WoW!!! as soon as i start the repair i will report on how well the gears held up, i ran the car about 30 times and would like to see the condition of the gears... and dont worry guys i will have this thing back to it original state in no time...

Man that thing looks beautiful, sorry to hear about the 'incident'

Those wheels that are on it in the first pics, do you know where I can get some?
