Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
My first RC car, which I've owned less than 6 weeks, is an old, beat up RC10T2. I'm really enjoying playing with it with my son (6). I completely disassembled it and put it back together replacing a few simple parts as needed (new bearings, ball dust covers, some turnbuckles...). My main issue is that the Futaba MC210CB ESC gets REALLY hot. I'm looking for a way to keep it cooler so we can run it longer. I have some brand new 2000 mAh batteries and one 2400 mAh also, but certainly can't run it hard for as long as those batteries will last.
I was wondering if any modern heat sinks would work on the ESC? I thought about finding some computer ram heat sinks and getting some thermal paste and putting that on top of the ESC. Anyone ever try anything like that? Have any other ideas?

Hi Kobur,
Maybe try installing a fan on top of the heatsink, you should be able to find one small enough from your local electronic store or if you have an old video card with a fan just use that.
Regards

Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
You could try a computer/electronics heat sink. I wouldn't use regular thermal paste though due to the dirt and dust it will surely attract. They have thermal epoxy that would be a much better choice if you were to go that route. In my opinion the best solution would be a fan like caesar mentioned. For example A Main Hobbies has a bunch to choose from: http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_1364/products_id/153357/n/Muchmore-Racing-25x25mm-Motor-ESC-Cooling-Fan Since the heat sink fins on the Futaba MC 210CB aren't deep enough to screw a fan to, you can just zip tie one on.

Thanks ceasar and Lowgear. I appreciate the advice.Lowgear wrote:In my opinion the best solution would be a fan like caesar mentioned. ... Since the heat sink fins on the Futaba MC 210CB aren't deep enough to screw a fan to, you can just zip tie one on.
I have lots of old computer parts, so I will look for a fan for it. How would I power the fan?
Also, is the heat sink on the MC 210CB removable? If so, I could perhaps replace it with something larger, right?

Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
What motor are you running with this speed control? These are not high performance race speed controls. A dirty stock motor or over gearing can make it run hot enough to burn up. If I remember correctly the lowest motor that you can use with this control is a 20 turn.

Well, that might explain quite a bit. The motor that came in it is a Quartz Touring Car Special. Here are links to pics of the can. It says on the outside that it is a 19 turn motor.urban hype wrote:What motor are you running with this speed control? These are not high performance race speed controls. Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
I ran a sapphire back in the day (17turn) and it worked fine. May want to check for a gear mesh that is too tight.
Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
I'll double check that when I run again. Blew the fuse late this afternoon, and I didn't have a spare, so have to make a quick parts run sometime this week.gomachv wrote:May want to check for a gear mesh that is too tight.

Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
if you are blowing a 30a fuse then it could be the mesh as discussed, gearing (what pinion is on it?) or possibly the timing has been messed with. since you got it that way you may be missing something big that will make a big difference in power, run time, and fuses. there are tons of tutorials on how to set gear mesh so I wont go into that
Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
It has a 48 pitch 23 tooth pinion with an 87 tooth spur gear.gomachv wrote:what pinion is on it?

Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
That seems pretty tall for a mod. I'd drop it to the teens or do. Do you have other gears?
Re: Modern heat sink options for Futaba MC210CB
No, but it came with an old Team Associated motor that I was told is a 27T motor. I may see if it is operable.gomachv wrote:That seems pretty tall for a mod. I'd drop it to the teens or do. Do you have other gears?

If there are any members close by I'm sure you will find a pinion gear and or some help. If nobody chimes I'm ill see what I can do to send you a smaller pinion to try.
