My first Yok…

Post by GreenHell »

My first Yok…

I pulled the trigger on an eBay YZ-10 last night, it was more of an impulse buy. I threw out an offer and to my surprise it was accepted. I’ve wanted one of these for years and if the photo’s aren’t too deceiving it should be a decent score and clean up nicely after I knock off the dust and corrosion (any tips on restoring the aluminum/magnesium bits would be helpful)
I’m going to keep it original and do a period correct paint scheme. Can’t wait for it arrive.

Nice YZ10! Looks clean, overall 8) I'd be interested to see the paperwork that came with it (looks like it's peeking out underneath the buggy) I don't remember seeing that 8) stuff in the archives yet-

Nice work on the blasted parts and the whole restoration, top notch. Did you end up putting on any kind of coating and has it held up?

I didn't spray anything on them and they still look pretty decent. A light coat of satin clear would work alright.

Your new purchase does look like it was built but never run (judging by tread on the tyres & the clear un-painted shell) i'm sure with a strip down & clean up to remove the storage dust & grime it will come out as fresh as when it was first assembled 8)

I had the magnesium parts on my Yokomo buggy bead blasted also. I also didn't coat them with any varnishes or lacquers, they have dulled down a shade or two from when they were freshly done but as the car has not been used & stored in my home, the 'patination' is even...

Here's a recent picture displaying the colour on one of the magnesium wheel hubs;

I suspected the car was never run based on the pics, that was really my excuse for the impulse buy. I wasn't going to say anything until I had it in my hands to confirm... :mrgreen:

But it does look like somebody did a sloppy glue job on the chassis brace, hopefully the chassis is not junk.

for magnesium, once they are bead blasted a light clear coat or a dip in wax will help preserve the finish.

The car arrived yesterday and except for the sloppy glue job on the chassis/brace it looks better in person than it did in the eBay pics. And the car shows no evidence of ever being run, it doesn't even look like it ever had electronics mounted. The only parts missing are front bumper, wing and under tray (just ordered a body/wing/tray from Blue Groove).

Here are a few quick pictures I took yesterday after blew off what looked to be about 20+ years of dust. I’ll post more info and pics later when I get home…

Thanks

you can fix that sloppy glue job by stripping the chassis down to nothing, and putting it in a bag with acetone, it will melt the glue off, and you can reapply more neatly almost as if it was a brand new car.

OR, you can keep wiping it down with a cloth with acetone on it if you don't want to soak the whole thing.

**disclaimer: only if it's CA, crazy glue.
