RC10 in memory of gramps

Post by frgna »

As mentioned in a previous post I'm building a runner in memory of my late Grandpa who was a marine and an incredible man.

Haven't been able to build a ton yet since then but here's how it stands as of now:

As you can see I switched to a different shock tower.

Have a few options / choices from here:
1) I have coming from the powdercoater an old aluminum tub that's been done in mil-spec flat sand color - thinking about switching to that chassis
2) Have a stealth transmission ready to go, but also have an aluminum 6-gear from REC on the way Monday...
3) Standard black arms, or I have some Barts arms that have also been done in mil-spec flat sand

4) Thinking about adding some Marine graphics - maybe some Semper Fi / RC10 graphics stenciled on in black paint?

Any ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks

Looks good. What kind of a chassis is that?

Thanks :) It is a graphite Andy's "truck" chassis (I think it dates from pre-RC10T days) for converting RC10's into trucks.

It was dark gray / black to start and I painted it with superflat camo paint.

Here's how it looked originally - as you can see it's just a little longer than a standard tub

There's no shine on our military vehicles. If going the desert tan look than accent with black. You could always throw a random olive green part in the mix of your trying to get a true military vehicle look as sometimes we have green parts. I have a fleet of OshKosh 1120A4 and some have green fuel tanks or small minor things like that. Or since your going the Marines route and want shiny things. Look at their dress uniform. Blood stripes and all.

Good idea on some olive!

FYI the Bart's arms have been done flat sand as well, that picture was pre-powdercoat. Definitely going to be minimal bling on this car.

Thanks!

I just finished experimenting with 0000 steel wool as well as 800 wet-dry, and it's pretty easy, with some effort to get it even, to give a matte finish to the outside of lexan, and paint the inside as usual.

I bet a high quality USMC cut vinyl decal (like for the back window of a car) would make a good paint mask.

And I would use the Team Associated letters to manufacture a couple semper fidelis decals.

Awesome idea! Here's to more tribute builds that don't come from a back issue of RCCA and require that one search the globe for the right decal!

Some updates - I finally got the anodizer to send me my chassis and bits.

I am leaning toward using the tub chassis (instead of the painted Andy's "truck" chassis) with black plastics and screws. I think the shock towers might be too much black, so I am thinking of fiberglass.

I mocked up the REC 6 gear tranny but I think I will go stealth instead.

Ideas welcome!!! Note I have the 10-T front end at my disposal. Think simple, strong, functional - Marine.

Thanks in advance for ideas!!! I am sure you guys have lots more in your RC10 creativity banks than I do!

It was a one off from a guy in Minneapolis - he was an RC fan and said he usually doesn't do jobs that small (I'm sure he lost money on this one) but wanted to do this one out of nostalgia.

Sorry he probably wouldn't like it if I put his name out...

Gramps would be proud of a build like that ;)
