Futaba Magnum PCM Trouble***Solved****

Post by transamman908 »

Picked up what looked to be a real nice pcm 1024. Looks to have had little use but I can't get it to power on. There was no battery or battery holder. I've tried a battery holder from my AM FP-T2PD and still won't power up. Noticed that inside the battery area the battery terminals are different between the 2 radio's. Does the PCM radio require a different battery or battery holder? This is my first PCM radio so not sure if the radio is toast or I'm using the wrong power source. Thanks

The holder was a 7 cell iirc. Probably keyed different. I'll look at my lesser model when I get home and see if it is also

Shows a holder with a dummy cell.

My PCM 1024, Magnum AM and Magnum FM all use an 8-cell holder with 8 AA's. This may sound dumb, but make sure the holder isn't upside down or the contacts won't match. And make sure the contacts in the holder aren't bent and not making contact.

Yes I tried all I could with it and still no sign of life. Can't believe it as I've had some real beat up futaba radios that you would never think to work come to life right away when batteries are installed. This radio I have looks like new and the previous owner claimed it worked years ago when they used it. My next move is to pull it apart and check for something inside that is possibly burnt. Maybe I'll try mailing in the warranty card and see what happens.

Problem solved! Discovered battery acid down inside the battery holder. Took it apart and found that both the red and black wires corroded off the small, white battery connection board. Soldered them back on and presto. :D :D

I feel like a genius when I figure something like that out. For about 3 minutes....

Awesome you got your transmitter fired up.
Hope you're doin' something fun.
