Leftover parts build?

Post by Jimbo302 »

I know I have seen several others go this route. Gather up all the spares and second string parts you have and create a runner. My question is, just how effective is that? I can see myself ordering a ton of new parts to build a beater that never was and spending too much in the end.
I started picking through my extras and found these thoughts running through my head.

There is where you are wrong.. you don't buy new parts FOR the beater... but you buy new parts for the good ones that just happen to have the lesser quality parts the beater needs :D

The only real exception is stuff like a shock rebuild or a diff rebuild. But mangy missmatched tie rods and the like are fine. As are tires to attach to reclaimed rims... or just use bald tires as slicks! lol

If your Leftover needs parts see if any of your good cars need those parts replaced and go from there.

The big problem here is when your mind goes into 'lets make this car nice' mode and you start buying nice stuff for it lol

I see your point. I do have the tendency to want to take things too far. maybe not into "perfect" territory, but when performance is concerned, I tend have a break it and upgrade it philosophy.

Whoops. I thought I posted this in the buggy section.

Performance.... Toss leftover brushed motor and esc in in and beat on it until it breaks then toss more used parts on it and run... Maybe some beat up second hand RPM parts... :)

You end up spending lots more then buying something complete. I have come to realize if it needs a tranny, shocks or any major parts it's not going to end up cheap.

I have built up beaters using scrap parts . Bent tubs , stripped out threads on the nylon parts , and all that other scrap the should go in the trash. When you have to buy a part for a beater they become resto projects or money pits.

I don't know... I would probably say 'when you have to buy a part to replace a perfectly serviceable part just to make it look better would be more of a money pit'... If you bust your last a arm and have to buy new ones just to run it is not really a resto :)
