Story of an AYK legends revival. BOOST!...MORE PICS 19/03/08
Well, this is going to be a hell of allot of work. I got this car in a recent haul of parts and cars form one of Australia's very best racers. He has been around for ages too - and really doesn't have an interest in the older cars - but he had just kept them in a shed for all these years - allot of cars were in the haul - including a couple of extremely rare Schumacher, Traxxas and Associated cars. These cars were factory cars - and have many hand made parts etc on them for World Title events back in the day..........but my favorite out of all of them is the AYK Boost.
This one is no less special to me - as I love AYK product. This car however is particularly special. Instead of the chain drive, this one has been converted to run a belt drive system grafted from a Kyosho Optima Mid (ball diffs kept too!!). Not only that - this boost has a custom Schumacher inspired slipper on the lays-haft. This car really should be quite a stunner - but here is the "big downer":
I will let the pics do the talking......................
THE STRIP DOWN HAS BEGUN...........
It made my heart break when I saw the Boost and other cars with absolute genuine racing factory history.....apparently they had been underwater several times....man does it show.
Now this car is a TOTAL MESS. The parts are so rusted - I have had to BREAK and smash bearings just to get some of the parts apart.
I WILL have this car back and running and looking perfect - with even more mods and tricks to have her performing better than ever. I love making seemingly impossible tasks work - I just hope this one does not break my determination....the rust actually welded the slipper balls and plates together!!
My Mate Bormac is tagging along for the ride too - he has the boost fever now as well - he has some parts - and is looking to get a donor car (Radiant Pro is also suitable)......we are going to build these cars to run - and run quickly..... this is going to be allot of fun - I hope you enjoy watching!
The tear-down has begun............
First item on the agenda is to ask anyone here if they have an original AYK RACE PREP saddle pack chassis for this car either for sale - or if they could scan it 1:1 for me. The Pro Radiant used this chassis as well - any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys - your comments are of course always welcome.
Cheers
Darryn

man you weren't kidding about being in the shed. that rust is heartbreaking. Look forward to see how they turn but remeber, you make them too nice and your buddy is going to want them back

Wow, that is some serious oxidation. Maybe they'll clean up with some sandpaper and polish?

Looks like a great project a real test of restoration skills, good luck.

Re: What "BOOST" you running? Story of an AYK legends revival...
The more I strip this - the worse it gets. I will soldier on though - as it is one of my favorite cars - and Jason (BORMAC) would never forgive me if I did either!!
Last time I went to the Ryde meeting I took about 20 cars - mostly race orientated cars with history. I also took along some of my more "well known" cars from articles like my Gold Edition Optima and my Viper..... The car that got the most attention though was my heavily modified RCL Incident - looks nothing like the original car at all - it is a stunner.
I will take along less this time though - mainly because of the new smaller full sized car (cant fit em all in) - plus the fact that I could not really devote the time to having three cars running and answering/yakking on with questions etc....I probably should not run - and just relive the glory days - as that is just as enjoyable (well - nearly).
Im a racer though - so I will be racing more - and displaying less.
I will be bringing some "your'e not going to run that are you" cars as well. Last year I ran a new built Samurai, Viper and Lazer ZXR - so I have to keep the tradition going......
Cheers

LOL - I didnt need you to get me to run new cars - I just have passions for NIB and shelfers as well
Everythging has its place... Like I have said in my articles from the very beginning - people should do this hobby for themselves - not what they think others want them to do.
You just happen to be a total freak !
Later my "Boost brother".
p.s - damn it - rust is messy when you try and remove it!!
Cheers
