Which Stealth trans should I use?

Post by Lowgear »

I have a King Cab coming in the mail and would like to put a Stealth trans in it. The question I have is which one? I read in this thread that the T2 and the T4 both have 2.60 ratios. What about the T3? Same as the T2, T4? Are they all physically the same?

Then you have the RPM 2.65 conversion that uses the original Stealth. What are your thoughts on using that? Besides a lower gear ratio, would it be stronger or weaker than a stock one from a T2, T3, T4?

as far as which one to use, I would go with whichever one is easiest to fit. They all come up on ebay for about the same money. I'm pretty sure however that B2/B3-T2/T3 all used the same 2.40 ratio trans, and the 2.60 ratio is only in the B4/T4 The three transmissions all use different mounting details and different motor plates.

I just looked at each manual and Charlie don't surf was right.

T1 Stealth= 2.25
T2 Stealth= 2.60
T3 Stealth= 2.40
T4 Stealth= 2.60

With that being said it looks like I will need either a T2 or T4 Stealth. I can also get a T1 Stealth and convert it to 2.65 using the RPM conversion. So the two final questions are...

Would the extra .5 of a ratio from the RPM kit make that much of a difference?

and

Which would be stronger? The RPM conversion or the T2/T4?

One isn't going to be easier to fit over another as they're all going to require quite a bit of fabrication. But its been done before and it'll be done again.

personally, i would use a b4/t4 trans. they're newer, and parts availability (if needed) will be much easier.

If you can make the B4/T4 tranny work I would go with that. :D

Well that does it then. I'm going to go with the T4 trans. I figure for the most part all i'll have to do is make an adapter plate. The trans will bolt to the plate, and the plate will bolt to the frame. But of course thats easier said than done.

-------------------------

EDIT: I've been doing a bunch of research the last few days and am not positive anymore that I want a T4 Stealth. It will be easiest to convert using the original Stealth as its the only one that can be mounted stand-alone without modification. As in the others rely on another part of the vehicle to mount to such as a shock tower. Plus the original Stealth has a flat mounting surface on the bottom and it has the proper mounting holes on the top.

The only downside is the price. Not only do I have to buy the Stealth trans I have to then buy the RPM 2.65 conversion kit for it.

I agree; use a regular Stealth tranny with the RPM 2.65:1 conversion kit. It will be the easier to mount, you won't have to cut a hole in the chassis or fiddle with spacers or shims or anything. Except for the slipper clutch, all the internal parts are still available, and the newer slipper clutch parts will fit; you'll just have to upgrade all the parts that first time.

I don't know if they ended up releasing it, but I saw pictures of the A&L Lethal Weapon tranny (think a belt-drive Stealth) mounted in a King Cab.

Yup, that pretty much sums up why I changed my mind. I will be ordering the RPM 2.65:1 conversion kit this weekend.

During my searching I came across some info about using the Lethal Weapon trans. From what I gathered Factory Works put out a complete Lethal Weapon conversion kit for the King Cab. The problem is I can only find two or three people out there that actually got one of the kits. I'm also afraid that there would be no parts availability if anything were to break.

daryl lane still has parts foe the lethal weapon trans, the only thing he dosen't have is outdrives. he stops in from time to time, if he sees this he could probably let you know what he has left.

Thanks for the info. I suppose I can e-mail him about it as well. I've decided to go with the Stealth on this truck but wouldn't mind Having one of those kits on hand if I ever buy another King Cab or don't like the Stealth in it.

I would just stick with the Stealth; time-tested, reliable, will work better than the stock tranny. Once the Stealth/3-gear design (I think MIP used the design first) came out, and everybody started copying it, the aftermarket tranny market pretty much died out, the tranny wasn't a weak-link in the car anymore and you just didn't need them.

The Lethal Weapon would be need for the retro or cool factor, but I doubt it would be much better than a Stealth.

I ordered some of the parts over the weekend. Though now that its December I have to use my money for gifts. But i'm going to try and get the rest of what I need as soon as possible. I'll then start a build thread.
