Cheap replacement for the MIP SP-1 Idler gear
I picked up a lot of used rc10 stuff a couple days ago. among the heap of filthy parts were 2 mip transmissions.
one had full metal gears with the updated lightened diff.
The other had the original style diff with a stripped delrin idler gear.
I recall reading somewhere that the sandscorcher gears can be swapped with the mip stuff, then suddenly a lightbulb went off!
Those little gears that come in the Lunchbox gear bag, but do not actually get used in the lunchbox. If you've ever had a lb/mp you know the one.
I think it is for the wild willys 1, not sure why they still include them in the lb gear bag, but I had a few to try.
It turns out that the gear is the same tooth count and pitch as the gears in the mip trans.
The inside of the gear has 4 ribs that slide over the 5mm shaft loosely, but with minimal play. It probably wouldn't last long riding on just the ribs.
I clamped the stock mip shaft in a pair of vice-grips such that the gear was centerd on the shaft. I put a large outer diameter 5mm shim on the shaft followed by the gear, then filled the cavity around the ribs with jb-weld. I put another shim on the top, and used the stock gear as a spacer and clamped the whole thing up to set. I got a little of the epoxy on the corners of the teeth, but that wont matter as the teeth on the tamiya gear are much wider than the ones on the diff and top shaft.
After it was all cured I used some shims to get the overall width matched up with the stock gear.
The trans spins nicely.
Now all I have to do is find a spur gear adapter (and build a car around this) and I can do some durability testing . I did find that the stock re-re sand scorcher spur fits, but then I would have to use the metric pinions too.
any advice on a gear adapter would be appreciated.

as a losi guy, i'm sure you have some of the robinson racing spur gear adapters layin' around. drill one out to 5mm and there you go.

I thought about that as I do have many losi pinned spurs and adapters, but I don't have a 5mm drill, nor a way to make sure it is properly centered.scr8p wrote:as a losi guy, i'm sure you have some of the robinson racing spur gear adapters layin' around. drill one out to 5mm and there you go.

You can use the aluminum or plastic spur adapter from a Team Pit Stop tranny.
I literally just put one on my SP-1 a few minutes ago and it's 100% bolt-on. I used to have several extras, but gave them away.

I can probably help you out with drilling out a hub adapter, if you come up empty.
Oh, a question on that little gear. Do the ribs extend all the way out to the edge of the gear, or is the gear designed to have 2 bushings/bearings installed? If so, you could simply add two to the gear, and avoid having to glue the shaft it. the gear won't care if the shaft is supported with bearings both externally and internally. true, you will have to buy the bushings or bearings, but that should provide an accurate location for the gear.

My issue is using using the plastic gear there ensures you will strip it out. A better alrternative is the CRP brass gears that were being sold on ebay.

MIP transmission was made using the design of the tamiya SRB gearbox, no surprise.
