Re: Pics Need Joel Johnson Optima Mid WC 1987' in Romsey...
I have a few pics from 1987 worlds and below are the ones, where Joel's Mid is present:
Joels Mid without body, but with rear wing: Joel's Mid in hands of Ernie in upper right pic from R.R.C.-magazine: A pic from French Auto8-magazine, where Joel's Mid is in trouble: And off course a Youtube video, where Joel's Mid is "jumping" with the others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cJLvSa9CcA
I hope these pics help.

Yes, it's a shame that there are very little and normally poor quality pics from old races. Only the winners cars are little better photographed.
Joel's body looks more a Mid with Tomahawk style side window masking or Tomahawk than Pro. The chassis with saddle pack battery installed looks very very wild. ESC, probably Tekin ESC190 PRO that he used in 2WD, is between cells and there seems to be still a lot room for wires to come out. Also to Schumacher ProCat, You can install Novak T1-size ESC between cells, but that was a tighter looking fit to me. Also the SP cells seems to be more at back than stick style battery.
If You are doing a replica, it will be an another interesting project for Your "Joel's car collection"

He sure didn't stick to 1 type of wheels
I see yellow died ultima wheels, though the same style was also found on AYK and french MRC cars I think.
Then, there's something which looks like a hotshot wheel, and ofcourse silver 10hole rears

that picture from the magazine is really cool....MIP rc10 and 'unnamed' yokomo 870c.
anybody know the history of the 870c with regards to masami? didn't he help design that car? He was driving a CAT at the event, did he switch over to yokomo right after?
interesting stuff...

Re: Pics Need Joel Johnson Optima Mid WC 1987' in Romsey...
I have also wondered, how many different wheels Joel and team Kyosho used. There is also a little difference on those wheels, because 3-piece Turbo Optima wheels were heavier than Ultima wheels and Optima Mid wheels were slighly lighter than Ultima wheels. Hotshot wheels doesn't have as much offset that kyosho wheels etc. Those MRC-wheels were a copy from Kyosho wheels and CRP did have later a very light Turbo Optima style 1-piece almost seetrue wheels, but those were quite weak. If You see some Denis Blandin's cars, he used them a lot. But obviously Joel trusted to yellow wheels.
This is going to be a little offtopic from Joel's Mid conversation.
Yeb, Masami was a Schumacher driver back then.
I have also a few pics from proto Yokomos from 87 worlds. There are also many pics from interesting RC10 modifications, but You will find them from here rc10talk or from http://www.retromodelisme.com/. If I and others start to post them here, we will be on page 10 atleast before all are posted.

Hello, Gil Losi make the 870C c car...
For the body shell, see below the different pic :
Kondo Optima Mid from the WC 87'.
The original Optima Pro Body.
The Original Optima Mid serie body
The windows schem are not the same, the side have different angle ...
And Christophe Blandin, say to me that the car came with the Pro body or a prototype from the Pro for the WC 87.

Re: Pics Need Joel Johnson Optima Mid WC 1987' in Romsey...
Did Gil really designed also this car? But somehow i'm not surprised.
But back to the subject... To my eyes Mid WC97 car body looks a proto body. I have always believed that the body was Mid's body, but it is definetly not. But to me it is not the Pro body either. The area behind front wheels in WC87 body, where is text "FUJIYA MODEL CLUB" is definetly different in Pro or did they just cut this area without the "underbody aerodynamic wing stuff". Also the end of roof and the area between rear shock tower seems to be different. Might it be possible that Pro body was used on cars that have narrow stick battery and proto body in wide SP battery cars? Is it even possible to install a 7-cell stick battery to Pro body? WC87 body looks as wild as Mid is and Mid could handle 7-cell stick battery. Do You PRP know did Blandin use SP or Stick chassis if he used Pro body? If I was doing a replica, I would use a Mid body, but paint the side windows like Pro/Tomahawk style.
And back to the offtopic... Wasn't Masami a private driver at 87 worlds? I have somewhere seen a Yokomo chainsaw (=834) with Masami's paint job on it. Might it be possible that Masami changed to Yokomo stright after 87 Worlds but before 870 come out? I have heard that Masami came to 87 worlds with short CAT but team Schumacher gave him a Long CAT after free practise. So Masami started the race with new long CAT and just win the race with it. Thats why Masami's winning car paint job looked more CAT's box are than Masamis green/white/rainbow style.

I liked papa Losi's Dog Fighter from the 87 worlds. How did he ever hold that front diff in place?

The original subject:
One thing came to mind, why don't You ask those straight from MagicMan? One guy here made a JJ's Ultima replica from 87WC and he managed to contact Joel and got some help about his Ultima parts. His story is here: http://studio68.no/rc/default.asp?id=1530 .
Offtopic subject:
Pops Yokomo at Worlds? The one with Revolution motor? The front diff stays in place with two small sheet that are above the front diff bearings, just like the production car have a diff cover.
