Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
Hi guys, I have a question for you all…
I have started to think about the decals on this buggy, and it seems I can’t make up my mind if I only should have the same decals as Bob’s buggy has or as Kyosho might have done? I mean if it was a Kyosho made buggy it would have far more decals then Bob’s buggy has on the picture.
So guys, which path should I choose, Bob’s or Kyosho’s???

Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
I would say Bob's, for 2 reasons: Because it's his car you're doing a replica of, and because you've done a pretty paint-job and slapping decals all over a nice paint-job just seems wrong to me.

Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
Mr.ED gave me an idée, if I do the Bob theme with a row along the “threshold” where the body is black!
What do think about that idée?

Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
Really sweet buggy!
In my misspent youth I tried to make a (car flattened) Marui Hunter into a realistic scale tube buggy - but I was 12, and frankly it ended up looking like, well, let's just say it didnt quite live up to my expectations
As you're really making this a period racer - and from the paint job, not connected to a major sponsor/race team, I would expect it to have some smaller sponsor logos (BF Goodrich, Koni, Edelbrock, etc...) on the black and pretty big numbers - maybe black on the yellow areas.
A buddy of my dad had an older baja racer and a couple of period drag cars, and posters all over his garage, and that's pretty much the way they all were.
Just my two cents worth.

Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
Thanks for your comment Zipster!
When I read the article about Bob’s buggy I learned that he had only one major Sponsor at that time, and that was KC lights. But several of other brands are mention in the article, such as Centerline, Goodyear, K&C, Bilstein, Weber and so on. You can read the whole article on Tobbe’s blog http://remote360.blogspot.com/
Almost all race cars at that time didn’t have that many sponsors because they were mostly privateers and amateurs. They worked on their cars in the week after work and raced at weekends and there sponsor was usually the local auto part dealer. I know, I have been there myself with my 1/1 scale Volvo 142 rally car back in the days!
I don’t like RC cars that are plastered with decals all over; it demands some skills to get that part right and tasteful. It’s often young RC drivers that plastered their cars with decals, and that is because they like to look like their idols. At least that’s my experience...

This is an awesome project, very nicely done Lars!
btw, that driver looks possessed, I wouldn't want to have to race against him.

Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
Hi guys
I’m struggling with the decals to my buggy, especially the decal on “hood”. On those pictures I had, I could see there was decal on the hood, but I couldn’t identify what it was. So I did some research on Bob’s buggy on the net, and I have found some more pictures! But I still can’t identify the logo! So place guys help me out here…
And I found a nice action shot to, enjoy!

Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
The misery of what Bob has on his hood is solved I think! I found another picture on Bob’s buggy and found out that hi was sponsored from a fast-food company named Jack in the Box! The fact this is a non-automotive product and as a non-American, I had never heard of this company before.
Now I only need the decal …

Very nice work!
What are you using to notch the aluminum tubing at the screw connections?

This is an amazing build. I am very impressed with all aspects of your work. Most impressive to me is how you got the frame bent by hand and each part to match.
Well done it looks fantastic.

Re: “Blueprint” Scorpion!
I used a type of threaded insert I found in a web shop for model trains in Germany (http://www.knupfershop.de/shop/index.php?cp_sid=1417532438520&cp_tpl=main)Brandon G wrote:Very nice work!

The 6mm tubing’s inner diameter is 4mm and the insert’s outer diameter and the thread is M 4,5, and it’s fine threaded 0,5. To find a M4,5 x 0,5 fine treaded tap took some time. A regular M4,5 is x 0,7mm it’s easy to find! But eventual I found it at a web shop located in Scotland (http://www.engineeringsupplies.co.uk/metric-fine-taper-hand-carbon-steel-p-672.html) and it was relay affordable, only 4$. When I did my inquiries with my local hardware supplier, he said that he had a M4,5 x 0,7 for 45$!
I want to send thanks to the guys that invented the internet and all the search engines!
The insert I used has M2 inner thread, that I used together with M2 flat head socket 12mm long screws. The insert is also available with M2,5 and M3 inner tread. To secure this inserts ones they where screwed in to the tube, I used Loctite 243. To fit the tube and the rod together I used a 6mm round file, no milling… And for cutting the aluminum tubing and even the rod I used a simple small pip cutter!
I hope this make some sense, and answer your question Brandon.
