By the way, FYI, I gently peeled off my Airtronics RX and the number behind is 92222, I was hoping to find the box art one...

I will soon receive the painted and decaled body from Doug. Then, I'm still lost about finding someone who could gold anodise the front shock collars... I'm afraid I'll never be able to have the front kick up and motor plate holes filled in and reanodised like you did... I'm still amazed how quick you put yours together!

I just noticed that Ruffy's receiver has the same ref. number but says "Balanced Mixer Receiver" where mine only says "2 Channel Receiver", does anyone knows if there is any real technical difference between the two?

Anyway, back to this project, I made really small progress lately, that is gathering all the plastic parts (some NIP, others coming directly from my 2 Edinger donors that received a quick peroxyde treatment). I also disassembled a complete early six-gear tranny that simply needed a thorough cleaning (note the big clip on the trans plate ). I really need to work on the front kick-up and the chassis now (sanding the AE logo and countersinking a few holes) so that I can FINALLY start building this thing, I can't wait any longer

I am a bit stuck on the build as I am too lazy to take out the dremel and modify the front kick-up plate (sanding the AE logo, rounding the corners and mill the two front tube screw holes). In the mean time, I found a brand new Sanwa/Airtronics RX that looks a bit closer to the box art one as this one says "balanced mixer receiver" where the previous one only said "2 channel receiver". The frequency, ref.# and color of the antenna wire are still wrong though, but that will do for now, I'm quite happy with it

Coming back to this one, not less than 4 years later, I might have beaten Scr8p's record?

No big update but I finally decided to bring the complete box of parts to light and start tearing some old plastic bags Worked a bit on the front end and still debating whether I should modify the front kick up, have the motor plate back holes filled and everything re-anodized the same color including the front shock collars. We'll see, I think I'll assemble the whole car first and maybe do that at a later stage. I hope to be able to update this thread before Jason finishes his Ultima.

I think I found something unnoticed so far about the early "Edinger" kits: While dismantling the front shocks to polish and clean them, I noticed metal spacers inside the shock cartridge! These shocks came with an original Edinger car that had G10 battery straps, recessed rear spring cups, double servo saver steering and Goodyear tires, so I'm pretty confident these spacers came in the early kits. I will have to check the rear ones to be 100% sure though. A detail worth to be added to the 25 years of the RC10 thread maybe?

So I can now confirm that the 4 early shocks had an aluminium spacer in the cartridge!



I'll use 4 original recessed spring cups, above are 4 reproduction made a few years ago. They are much brighter.

Tires had seen a better life, especially the rear ones, which are softer than the fronts, and were a bit cracked, so I went to the pharmacy and bought a bottle of glycerin to feed them and prevent further drying. It is a natural compound that helps preserve natural rubber. Silicon-based treatment should be avoided as it accelerates aging. It gave the tires a new youth definitely.

Next is assembling the front and rear sway bars and chop the front nose tubes!

I can't be 100% sure of course as the car was used when I got it (see first page), but I highly doubt these were added afterwards. The car had low run time and the fact that these spacers are professionaly machined and of the exact same dimensions (just a larger ID) than the plastic ones really makes me wonder. One day I'll dismantle one shock of my mint early Edinger to check.

To answer your question: that's a Dubro kit that I used to make the special tie rods and balls and ball cups that are featured on the box art car. Note that the ball cups included in that pack are similar but not exactly the same as they have a hex shape where the ones on the box art car are round, pretty much the same as the ones used for the original front sway bar kit. Very flimsy concept for tie rods for sure but it is part of the charm of the box car.
