Radical idea: Shelfer Exchange/Loan

Post by flipwils11 »

I don't know if this idea would ever fly, but here goes.

Has anyone ever thought about some short of shelfer "exchange/loan" among a trusted group of folks? I only have a few shelfers compared to others, but even though I am still fond of them, a change of scenery may be called for. BUT I would never want to sell my cars, just maybe loan them out so I can share the beauty of the project I worked on. And maybe others feel the same way.

Since some of us have significant dollars invested in these little cars, trust within an inner circle beyond just the positive feedback forum would be paramount. And obviously, no driving the shelfer!

I for one think it would be really cool to stare at someone else's pride and joy to mix it up, with the understanding that I get my own shelfer back!

Is this too nutty?

I don't think it's too bad an idea. I could understand if a person has a perfectly restored example and another member wants to borrow it for reference, but good pictures are almost as good!

Now! I could understand lending a runner to other members so they can get a test drive! I'm all for that, but only to trusted longtime members!

I don't trust the shipping companies enough to send my cars around the country, and none of mine are even really worth much.

I was contacted a few years ago to have my OEM Honda Civic spoiler sent to a reputable business in California to be used for a reproduction mold. I never did it because I don't trust shippers. I trust my packaging, but it amazes me how things can be damaged during shipping. Even with insurance, priceless and rare parts can't be replaced when damaged or lost.

Based on my experiences with one "trusted" member here, I wouldn't seriously consider any trade of significant value.
Completed projects: CYANide Onroad Optima | Zebra Gold Optima | Barney Optima | OptiMutt RWD Mid
Gallery - Coel's Stalls: Marui Galaxy & Shogun Resto-Mods | FrankenBuff AYK Buffalo | 1987 Buick GNX RC12L3

i was just going to say something similiar, shipping the cars are what im worried about.. even with insurance... i dont know if anyone has ever tried to file a insurance claim with usps, but its not a easy process... rightfully so, since im sure scammers rip them off all the time...

I'll go first. Who's got something they want to exchange for my Gallop? It doesn't have to be anything pre-built, I'd even be willing to take an unassembled/shrink-wrapped kit off of your hands.

OK Tim, you're on! Here's the car I'll be sending for you to stare at for a few months. Just let me know when you want your Gallop back.

Ha, nice! What's all that wacky white piping? Is that the Outlaw sprint version? Or some sort of home concoction?

yeah, not that I have much of any significant value, but I would be very hesitant because of shipping mishaps.....

You just need to increase your shelf stock, then rotate the inventory every so often so you've got something "new" on display.

Well, I think that settles it. I completely agree with the takes on shipping, and if the friends at UPS/Fedex/USPS "lost" it or ran over it with a truck, who would be responsible, the original owner or the "borrower"?

Would be a real mess! I guess pictures will just have to do!
