Restoring questions

I'm very keen on acquiring a Gold Pan of some description, but I've never owned an RC10 of any description before (the closest I've ever come is my SC10 )

I've been reading as much as I can, and have already learnt some tricks (peroxide for example), but the thing that concerns me is what or how to get the actual tub and other gold bits looking quite acceptable. As most of these cars would have been run at some point in their life, most chassis will be marked t some extent.

Is it a matter of re anodizing the chassis, or is there some other preference. If anyone has any advice or links it would be great.

Please note that I do not have a car yet, but definately will be looking to acquire one shortly.

most of the stock gold parts can be bought through ebay or maybe a hobby shop if you go looking. After you get 25 meaningful posts, you can get access to the buy/sell/trade section of the forums and possible get parts from members here too.

getting mint or new parts can be a challenge though.

As to anodizing. I'm not certain of it myself but I wouldn't mind finding out about it. I'd like to get all my anodizing to matching. There are some guides here in the forums but it takes time to find them.

you have to figure out what you can tolerate. Most chassis' will be used and priced reasonably. the older and more mint the chassis, the higher the price. If you can live with a pretty clean chassis with some nicks and scrapes, then that's what you shoot for. If only new-in-pack is what you want, then you will be waiting to find the right one and need to be willing to spend the cash to obtain it when you find it.

I started out with a decent chassis pan and as I found better pieces I updated my shelfer. That gives you a base to start building a few more cars from, and on and on. Pretty soon you will have plenty of chassis in all different conditions


If the chassis are scratched but not gouged, they re-anno pretty nicely. I had this batch done a couple weeks back. You can see the marks but the anno helps hide them to a large degree

half the fun is cutting a sealed kit open. the other half is assembling it's new, fresh and clean contents.

cleaning and restoring old beat up parts is not fun, it sucks. the fun only begins once that hell is over.

cleaning and restoring. ultra sonic cleaner + peroxide bath with UV bulb and its effortless. just a little time consuming at best.

I've spent more time disassembling and assembling my cars than anything else.

One of my favorite pass times, is restoring these cars, but yes a NIB one is the best, but then again, its hard to open one up.

Not if you have an X-Acto knife. The box just pops open then... and somehow bags get opened, and one thing leads to another, and before long you're standing in the driveway over a body-less chassis, adjusting the steering trim and wondering where the weekend went...
(is it any wonder why I don't collect NIB cars?)
