My crappy Rc10-DS

Post by ra272 »

Hi there, here is my DS "project".

I bought this piece of crap a few weeks ago, if you watch the picture quickly, it seems in overal good shape...

Image

If you watch closer, you can see most of the metal parts are highly corroded...and there is black paint everywhere :|

Image

And it's worse under the paint...

Image

Image

Some parts are salvageable:
From right to left: rusty, ball burnished, heated and oil cooled.
Image

Stealth outdrives had to be grinded down and polished.
Image

Lots of parts are NOT salvageable: chassis, nose, front shocks, anti roll bars (both), most screws and nuts, servo saver...

for example, look at this anti roll bar ball after a light ball burnishing:

Image

I don't care, lets go for a new "project car": the graphite DS.

I dont think it's acid, I think this car has been stored in a humid cellar for years. Corrosion acts like tooth decay, it grows underneath the anodization and create cavities.

Front shocks had litlle black stains, but under the anodization, you can see cavities not vast but very deep, almost all alloy parts are damaged.

Doesn't look crappy to me. I'm with Marlon though. That is a weird piece of corrosion on the bottom of that chassis. I wonder if a grain of salt or something got underneath a scratch in the ano. Were you maybe eating curly fries or onion rings during the initial build when you hand started that screw? Very strange. I haven't seen it before quite like that.

So, I decided to cut this crappy tub and keep the front and the rear part.

Ball burnished, polished, drilled, threaded, and anodized in black. 8)

Image

Same with the front part, I used the 3 existing holes in the carbon chassis...don't know what they were made for.

Now I can use the two original nose tubes.

GREAT Save of a DS!

I was checking out that auction and had bid on that same one.

Your car build is progressing nicely.

Too bad for the acid wash chassis but you look like you are getting this DS back up and running.

Excellent build Ra272, really looking forward to seeing the final product. Great idea using the rear of the old tub, I'v always wanted to try that. Are you going to convert to modern wheels/tires - there are a number of threads on this.
