Questions for onroad guys

I picked up my first onroad car the other day. Its a Kyosho 1/8 F1. I've wanted one for a loooong time, but it seems when they popped up on ebay, I never had the funds. I'm happy I waited though, because this one is in pretty good condition. Heres some pics...








The only issue I have are the wheels, because they have no tires on them.





I don't know the first thing about mounting foam tires. I tried to look up tires on ebay, but all I see are premounted ones. Can anyone point me in the right direction where I can buy the foam tires?

Also, chances are I will rarely run this since parts are hard to come buy, but in the event I do I would run it in a regular parking lot. I dont understand the whole blue and green dot stuff, so what would be a good tire for that?

And finally, if any of you guys mount onroad tires, and would be willing to mount these for me for a charge, let me know.

Very cool car! The "dots" are just different compounds, green being soft, blue is med/hard but that all varies by company. Mounting is easy, contact cement on the rim and inside the tire, male rim into female tire and let cure. 1/8 foams at Calandra Racing Concepts you'll need 2 sets. Truing them so they are not out of round or wobbly might be the trouble depending on the back side of those rims. Got a shot of them?

Heres a shot of the inside of the wheels...



They are actually very smooth around the edge. It doesnt sound too difficult to mount the foams, it just makes me nervous doing it for the first time with wheels that I'll probably never be able to replace if I mess up.

If I remember correctly, they were released in 1992. They came in two versions, electric and nitro. The nitro was actually really cool because Kyosho designed it to where the engine leaned on its side so it didnt stick through the body. There was a fan on the driveshaft, and when you hit the gas, the fan would turn and cool the engine. That allowed the body to stay scale and you didnt have to cut holes anywhere for airflow.

I cant believe these were never a big hit. I dont know if it had to do with price or not, but I recall them being between $400 and $500.

Anyway, I am beyond pumped to get this. Its always been in my "top 3 must have before I die RCs."

Check the wheel size. 1/10 foam wheels are around 50mm diameter. You may have to buy 1/10 foam depending on the wheel size.

As far as mounting, 3M contact cement is very good, I think the number is like 8002, it is yellow. Weldwood or whatever junk from home depot is not really as good as 3M.

Basically, you need to brush contact cement on both the wheel and the inside of the tire. Let everything dry overnight, and then dunk the wheel and tire in Laquer thinner or MEK. The tire should slide right onto the wheel. Kimbrough used to make tire horns for 1/12 1/10 and 1/8, but I'm not sure if they still make them, or if they would fit your car. Still, it should not be very hard to do, the horn just makes it easier. After you get the tire on and pretty straight, let it set overnight again to dry and you are ready to go.

what are those extra forward links on the front suspension shock bellcranks? Looks like a really neat car. A sweet brushless system would rock!

If you can get a second motor mount you can make this car twin-motored. Regarding the tires, be careful with the thinner, the rims may not be able to stand it. You could also go the Tamiya way, and use thin double sided tape to mount the tires.

Ive been super busy at work this past week so I havent been able to mess with this lately. I measured the diameter of the wheels and it looks like theyre 50mm, so based on what AscotConversion said, it looks like this will require 10th scale foams.

It also looks like the rims are 12mm hex. Are most onroad wheels the same size?

If your hubs are 12mm hex, you may try Super NItro RS4 or Kyosho Super 10 wheels/tires. The Super Nitro RS4 stiff is still relatively available, and you can get a 5 spoke or a mesh/BBS looking style. (White,black' and chrome too!) The only part that may need a little work is the fronts, since the bearings are in the rim. You could maybe modify a set of rims like Miguel did for the front in this thread:

Well I finally found a set of NIP original tires. They cost me a small fortune, but man do they look great!!!
