YZ-834B project build

Hi all I'm new here but after reading up on a few other builds Ithought I'd post up my Yokomo YZ-834B build project ,It starts as what is I'm sure a very failiar story ,I'm in my mid 40's ,used to race 1/10 back in my teens and have recently try'd a modern buggy but after stumbling on threads like this one I started to hanker for the one that got away when Iwas a kid ,for me it was the original Dogfighter YZ-834B ,mono shock front and rear.
Now they just don't suface for sale that often anymore and when they do they attract top money ,so I thought I'd start collecting parts as and when they come up on ebay or anywhere else I can find them .
What I have so far collected are
Chassis
Gearbox
Front drive houseing
Rear shock and linkages
CNC front C hubs
Front steering knuckles
Front axles complete with one way roller hubs
Servo
Front suspension pivot pin set
Servo saver and steering linkages
4 Pinions
Body and wing

What I've fabricated myself
Roll over hoop
Rear suspension arms
Rear guard
Wing mountings

Whats on its way
Front centre drive and sprocket
Front suspension arms top and bottom
Reciever
Rear axles and hubs
Spring steel wire to make anti roll bar
Battery tray

Still to find
Chain but I might have a scorce
Top deck chain guide
Wheels ,again may have them sorted in a day or two
Tyres
Speed controller and motor
Front shock

So I have a reasonable start on it , there will be a few parts that i'm making myself for now as they are hard to find or rediculously expensive ,I have my own lath and mill so can make a veriety of parts to a good standard.







I'm quite pleased with the roll hoop ,you may notice the rear arms I've made have alarge threaded hole where the axles should go ,this is because I'm still waiting for the rear axles and I need the dimensions before i finish them with a screw in aluminium bearing hub .

Nice rear arms. But the rear suspension geometry wont work using the original rocker arms... they are too soft and it simply would distort instead of work as designed...

What I found was flex in the mounts on the gearbox so I made up a CF top brace ,this stopped the flex and the rear suspension is very smooth now.

Those do look nice though.

This is my own try at at a modernized 834B

I may have another go a this now I have 4 of the above shown rockers. Probably will use the Academy wyvern drive train this time around and keep the MX4 as you see it in the other tread

what can I say I'm a forum tart ,but I do try to give each a slightly different flavour as the intersts on the forums are all different and the answers to questions change ,RCGroups is mostly a modern Bashers forum ,Oople is more a racers Forum and this is a Vintage forum .

I thought i had some wheels off ebay but the auction ended at 4am ,somebody sniped them for 50p more than my high bid oh well I ordered a slightly tatty set for more money ,hopefully if i spin them up on the lath and use some fine wnt-n-dry on them they will clean up ok and they are genuine yellow 834b wheels ,the others i was bidding on were aftermarket white ones that someone had dyed purple so I'd have had to paint them anyway so i saved the price of a tin of yellow paint.

Front Shock arrived with some front shafts today ,in fact 6 shafts arrived today ,2 genuine Yokomo front shafts ,2 AE RC10 classic shafts and 2 HPI shafts that i might modify to fit the rear .
Why the RC10 shafts I hear you ask ,well in "Old Ones and First Ones " forum someone suggested that the RC10 shafts might fit the front of the YZ-834B ,so I ordered a pair to try ,the length is identicle ,the ball is just 0.1mm larger but fits my cups without friction and the pin is 0.3mm larger diameter so easily Dremmeled down to size ,the only other difference is the pins being aligned end to end on the AE shafts and at 90 degrees on the Yokomo shafts ,so this does indeed meen that the AE RC1O Classic shafts can be easily fettled and used as fronts for the YZ-834B .

Radio gear arrived today and I finally found a chain so I now have all the critical bits ,shapeways emailed that the battery tray is finished and on its way .

Fitting the rc 10 dogbones to metric cups is bit of a gamble. Long ago I fitted rc10t arms on an ultima and used rc10t dogbones. It all fit, but when I tried it again with fresh cups it was a big hassle. The dogbones would only fit certain cups of the 20+ I had by then. And even then I had to make sure I put them in right. If I just turned one 180 degrees it wouldn't fit the cup anymore or bind at the slightest suspension move from horizontal.
There's a very fine rang within the involved tolerances which makes some work without modding. Thimgs involved are the diameter of the cup and ball end, but also how well the crossaxle is centerd in the bone amd how well the slot is cemtered over the cup.
The right length kyosho or hpi dogbones will give you a guaranteed fit with the yokomo outdrives. Certain tamiya ones also would work but others not. Tamiya was not so consistent with dimensions between different models.

you can essentially grind the axle cup/slot to fit the rc10 bone, or pull/push the cross pin out of the bone and file the ball end on a lathe, and make a custom cross pin with different diameters on each end. I think I would grind the slots and file the ball ends to make them fit, unless you find a direct drop in metric one.

The RC10 shafts are not plug and play but as you both said they need very little fettling to make work ,I've never owned a kyosho to compare to ,in fact as a nipper i was a Tamiya fan boy with the only other make i try'd being a Mrdave Metiore .
