Shodog's MIP 4x buggy

I've finally been able to fulfill a dream to build the venerable MIP 4x buggy. In 2004 I built up a chassis using the MIP 4x400 cable drive 4wd conversion kit. A bunch of period SRB hop ups and a homemade chassis.







Not really satisfied, I tweaked the design a couple of years later in 2006. Added a few more hop ups and cut a new chassis. Had my welder make me a custom rear cage shaped like a stock cage but made to clear the MIP Hot Trick transmission mount and bolt to the chassis



I liked what I had made but after seeing a pics of the MIP 4x chassis in vintage advertisements



I knew which direction I wanted to go for this build. GomachV cut the repro 4x Chassis well over a year ago. An upon receiving it I realized I needed a set of MIP front uprights. Bummed because I sold a couple of sets off in the past in favor of using the RCH front uprights. I searched all over and put out several feelers on Facebook forums looking for a set. Finally a set popped up on eBay and a couple of eagle eyed forum members sent me IM's. They were pricey but they were mine.

Much to the chagrin of MIP purists I wasted no time in dyeing the uprights to match the other nylon parts.





Then set about to transfer parts over to the 4x chassis.









I love how it has turned out. Im still deciding about what I want to do for electronics.

Looks pretty sweet. It's good to see the MIP uprights on there instead of the RCH ones. The front gearbox is in the right place now.

I know it's been done a lot, but I reckon you couldn't go wrong with Period Novak speedo, servo and receiver.

I have a questionsas I'm finally assembling my MIP 4x400 car too, using IRS-200 and T200 tranny with one of GoMach's awesome 4x Chassis.
It looks like you have used a housing adapter on the rear tranny that is similar to MIP part X-7, the housing adapter for front tranny that holds the cable in place. The T200 doesn't have such as adapter and no adapter for the rear tranny is included in the MIP 4x400 kit ( certainly not the one I have anyway). What is this part please, and without it, how do I attached the cable and housing to the T-200?

Well, the functional geometry of the MIP and RCH front are different! RCH is essentially identical with Tamiya but MIP tubes positions are different

The X-7 housing adapter gets glued to the T200 case the front case has the adapter molded in.



If your front case doesn’t have it then possibly it’s a later version or has been modified to run the chain drive. The chain drive requires you to cut the housing adapter off the case to make way for the chain sprocket and new top shaft.

Thanks Shodog. My front tranny case doesn’t have an adapter pre molded,and when you read step number 2 on instructions I posted it says to drill 1/4” hole, which I did, and then glue X-7 to front tranny case. What am I missing? Even if it’s a later version( I didn’t know / don’t know if there was more than one 4x400 cable version) then the instructions and included parts don’t accommodate an X-7 type housing for rear any tranny case. The front case hadn’t been modified in any way before I drilled the hole and this is a cable not chain 4x400 kit. Baffled...

Are these the instructions you have? Looks like they want the rear gearbox drilled for the adapter. They call the front gearbox case by part number x-13, but it says to drill and glue the IRS case in step 2

This makes sense now! For the record I was wrong, my front tranny case does have a pre molded adapter, as shown.

That's an awesome build , only original srb parts left that I could see are the tyres !

Thanks for the comments. Tonight I was able to get the MRP Baja Bug body roughly trimmed and mounted.
