What Modern Tires for a DS street bashing
I have a set of stock foam tires for the DS, but I'd like to set this up in a way it can take modern tires.
I'm looking to bash on pavement, maybe some light dirt if there is a flat enough area. The battery will be a Nimh but the motor is slated to be hot at 6900k.
It looks like 2 good options are
foam drag race tires
Contact Drag Racing Rear 45mm Wide Tires (30 Shore) w/12mm Hex
Contact Drag Racing Front 32mm Wide Tires (30 Shore) w/12mm Hex
Or VTA Rubber tires
Protoform Vintage Racing Pre-Mounted Rear Tire (2) (31mm) (White)
Protoform Vintage Racing Pre-Mounted Front Tire (2) (26mm) (White)
There is width difference between the set R 45vs31 F 32vs26
Are there any technical problems with either of these sets? I have mostly seen touring tires on LoboNYC builds, so I am not sure if that is what makes the most sense.
I am getting my information mostly from amain www.amainhobbies.com/choosing-the-right-onroad-rc-tires-and-wheels/cp1119 It seems all racing tires will be 24mm wide, with non-racing cars go wider up to 30mm in the rear. It seems the advantage would be that these touring tires are easy to find and inexpensive.

On my B4 street basher I like Schumacher U6709 front tires with U6652 foam inserts and U6710 rear tires with U6653 foam inserts. All of it on Jconcepts wheels.

Re: What Modern Tires for a DS street bashing
Hi Joseph,
You want a tire for street bashing? then i would go with any of the VTA models from HPI or Protoform. Kyosho and Losi both offer VTA wheels if you want to toy around with different styles.
Both the HPI and ProtoForm sets are great on pavement and wear nicely. I've never had technical issues with them. Im happy with performance and grip on the blacktop.
You dont have to limit yourself to VTA style wheels as any 12mm hex wheels will fit, however you may need to enlarge the center wheel hole on some of the wheels to make them fit.
The first set of tires you posted may be prove too wide and may likely have issues with the links rubbing on the inside of the wheel.
Anyway...hope you run your DS till the tires wears out!

OK I'll look into the VTA tires. I'm looking to keep this build mostly with available parts.LoboNYC wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 6:07 pm Hi Joseph,

Have any tips on how to soften old foam tires? I was going to run what was on it for a bit before buy new tires. It'll let me decide which body I am going to run.

Re: What Modern Tires for a DS street bashing
I've heard using Coppertone suntan lotion does a good job on foam tires. Haven't tried it yet though.

Can I use the b4.1 front hex axles or do I need the longer truck ones?

Re: What Modern Tires for a DS street bashing
Personally , i try to get a narrow hex for the front. I've never messed with b4 parts but the idea is to have narrow front hex nuts in order to keep the wheel closer to the chassis. minimal offset wheels are better in the front as well. Narrow hex and no offset front wheels allow them to tuck under a 200mm body.
For the rear, i use a wider hex nut to try and keep the wheel track wider than the front. but not wide enough to cause wheel and body rub.

How are you adapting the front blocks to take hex axles?LoboNYC wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 12:19 amPersonally , i try to get a narrow hex for the front. B4 suspension uses smaller diameter hinge pins. I wouldn't go that route.

You just ream the hole to 1/8". A couple of mine have them.Frankentruck wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 6:03 am B4 suspension uses smaller diameter hinge pins. I wouldn't go that route.

Re: What Modern Tires for a DS street bashing
Ive used the axle/c-hubs from the associated SC10 4x4. And as Juicedcoupe mentioned, you ream the hinge pin hole to 1/8" in order to accommodate the larger diameter DS hinge pin.juicedcoupe wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 6:21 am
