RC10 - A Stamp Rebuild - Chipped Idler Gear

Post by GreenBar0n »

Recently received this RC10 from ebay. Got it torn down and cleaned.

One of the idler gears, ASC#6613, has a couple chips out of the teeth.

Is there anyone making those for sale?

What the heck?!? Where are the integral steel gears on the outdrives? That doesn't look right.

<edit> Oops, optical illusion from the camera perspective. Nevermind.

- With the release of the CC and 40th anniversary cars, there's a chance that AE might release a batch of new ones.

- Same as above, you can look on Ebay for guys parting out new cars.

- You can still find new original gears on Ebay from time to time. Expect them to be pricey. The newer black ones are stronger than the white ones.

- There are 3D printed ones available. My LHS owner said that he has installed a couple sets and that they seem okay. I wouldn't expect them to be as strong as originals.

- You can get some old (worn) outdrives and cut the dogbone cups off. Not my personal choice, as I like the idea of having the idle gears as a week point.
Always looking for new and interesting ways to waste money.

Thanks for the link, I was reading up on the steel gears, and the deburring necessary.

I was trying to get the chipped tooth angle in the picture, the camera flash made it look weird too.

Much thanks for the options available in 2024! Of all of those, the black Delrin gears sound like the ideal choice.

@Dangeruss PM'd a shop to me that had the ASC6614 Delrin black gears in stock, for $32 total, it will give me peace of mind knowing it's as good as it gets for a 6-gear.

Thanks again guys, I'll get back to this project when the gears arrive.

Should I put bearings in this kit, or are there any other improvements I could make in the gear box while it's open?

The newer editions of the gears are beige.

That was for the 2013 as well as the cc release.

Does anyone know if they are sturdier than the original gears?

Would also be curious to know the answer to this.

Having a difficult time figuring out the spur and pinion on this. This is the way I received this car:
Image

The black spur gear in the picture, has the slipper adjustment spring and nut, and the metal clutch discs and plates on either side, but there were no diff balls in the spur gear. Was that supposed to work correctly? This is what I found when I pulled the slipper apart.
Image

The kit included the stock spur/pinion, and bunch of diff balls.
Image

Image

Is there any benefit to the black gear, with, or without the diff balls?

Thanks.

No benefit, acts like no diff.
You’ve got everything you need there to make it functional as a diff again.

The RC10 6 gear didn't include a slipper clutch. Many folks these days mistake the diff for a slipper - like those on the Stealth tranny.
Looks like you have 64dp spur and pinion.
That's a really nice clean survivor. You're lucky to find it.

I wouldn't put a 64 pitch gear on a 6 gear transmission. The spur wobble will likely trash it.

Just to make sure I understand you guys, I should be using the black spur, and I should put the diff balls in, that would be the best I can do with what I've got here?

What's the most ideal setup, even if I have to purchase parts?

First 6-gear I have had, my other (3) are Stealth.

Thanks, guys!

64 pitch gears are good for clean carpet / on road driving, but are less durable for any rough surface driving. Whichever spur you choose, put diff balls in it.
