RC10 Championship Edition resurrection

Post by tgfarrell »

I bought this kit in the summer of 1990 from a local hobby/track shop in Mars PA. I put it together but never raced it seriously. I mostly pulled it out to run around the driveway and the neighbors gravel lot and some hills around that lot. The black tape is to block out water from splashing into the chassis while running over puddles and yes snow. I never painted the body or installed the wing. The sticker kit was ugly and I didn't see a need for the wing at the time.

I've carried it through 3 moves and finally retired and pulled it out. The pictures give you an idea of what I have.

I have an order to pickup locally at the Amain distribution warehouse near me here in Charlotte with new tires and some paint. Basically, I'll clean it up, paint the body, do the wing and swap in new tires. The electronics are still Futaba tx/rx, servos and an MSC.

I did source a new NiHM battery and charger off Amazon - Tenergy 7.2v 3800mAH battery with a charger. Ran it around the yard a bit and it really moves and can run a lot longer than 15 minutes now. The old NiCD and timed charge only lasted for 15 minutes.

I will document my progress in this thread. As you can see its an A stamp without the stealth transmission but it is a #6016 kit with ball bearings.

What a great looking kit. One thing to do with older plastics is to soak them in water to rehydrate them. They will be much less prone to breakage if you do that.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Hobby express! That's where I bought my gold pan and graphite rc10s. Ran the oval there as a kid.

The place I got mine from was called Wildwood Hobby shop in Mars, PA. I looked and they don't appear to exist anymore. I remember they had a track though.

Yes, that’s the name. The owners of wildwood hobbies opened up a new hobby shop in cranberry called hobby express.

The oval track was down stairs and the shop was upstairs diagonal from the 7/11.

I’m from saxonburg originally.

Got some supplies from Amain here in Charlotte, no shipping cause its close enough I can pickup at the distribution warehouse.

Already painted some things and put the new tires on the buggy. I'll be masking the body and wing next.

Masked off and ready for paint. We'll see how well the tape works. I taped and cut to get the curves. I already masked the windows. I may take the silver and to the A and B pillars with it but haven't decided yet.

Its a simple scheme, a bit of a take off on the box art but with just the orange (camel yellow) on the bottom and white on top and the wing will have orange on top and the rest of the wing white (pearl white).

The colors will get backed with the bright silver.

Looking good!

I was in Saxonburg today and had to make my way to Cranbberry.

He is the old Wildwood Hobbies now.

Ok, take it easy on me. Never painted a body before but did one this afternoon. Took longer to mask it with tape that do the painting.

I had some bleed through on the white paint areas when doing the orange that I didn't wipe up good before I did the white. Thats the slight orange smudegs you see on the roof. I toyed around with painting the windshield a pillars and edges silver just to get a feel for doing something like that. So its a bit rough. The wing went well except when putting the wire into the plug mounts it scrape up the paint with I did on the bottom of the wing to make the top look good. No sticker on yet, that next. I may buy some more. I mounted the driving lights by drilling a hole in the base and using some spare screws and washers to back the attachment to the roof. I though glue would be weak and messy. I like how those turned out. I want put some KC stickers on the white front covers of the lights.

Sticker it up and it's good to go! Looks like it turned out fine. Good first effort. 👍

That's what happens when you are doing it correctly. If you don't count drying time painting is quick.

Applied some 35 year old stickers and some modern ones as well. Need to get another sheet with some period correct stickers to add on still.
