Thanks I'll go forward and invest the time. I've always resisted the whole cloud computing concept but I'm slowly coming around. The benefit of continuous, automatic and transparent software updates alone seems to offset some of the potential pitfalls associated with running software that's so dependent upon the web.
I've also looked at some other alternatives available and there appears to be movement away from feature based modeling and toward direct modeling. I'm not sure that direct modeling suits me but at least Fusion offers both options. If I were new to CAD, I probably would be more open to direct modeling. I like to organize my models by features so that I can more easily modify them if it becomes necessary. Not that direct modeled parts cannot be modified; I guess it's just a mindset. I tend to think of parts as a collection of features.
Thanks for your feedback guys.

Found a first gen Kyosho EP Fantom parts lot and of course it had the famous broken sprocket. I was able to find a cad drawing off sdp/si for a 15t sprocket (grabbed a 14 as well) and was able to modify it for a press fit on the stock one way assembly. I don’t expect the pla part to hold up to much power, but as a proof of concept it was perfect. I now have an order in with shapeways for a nylon print.

That’s great to know. When I have more time I want to print a drop in replacement for the gear diff on the kyosho cars. The gears have been impossible to find for years and I’d really like to do a proper 48p spur on it. I don’t think my bevel gear knowledge is good enough currently so maybe a planetary set. Still thinking it out.

Finished up the spur today. Made a 68t and a 70t. I didn’t realize how dramatic the difference between 48p and .6 module was- the 70t is the same diameter as the stock 64t.

I have the bevels ready to print. I also have a locked rear drawn up, because who doesn’t like a solid rear and dual one ways up front.

This was a bad print because of the elephant foot but I just love the look of it lol.

First try on the bevels was a success! Need to tweak a little here and there but it’s functional.

For the gear profiles I found a much easier option than using the built in tool. I downloaded the cad file for the sprockets and gears from SDP/Si as a .stp file and simply extrude out the centers of them leaving the teeth. I would have never got this far on the bevels if I had to reverse engineer them, I just found the 20t mitre gears they had and used the ones that seemed the closest in diameter. They ended up being almost identical to what kyosho used

websites a bit funky to use, Google these sample part numbers and it should take you there. You have to log in to view and download the cad files.

A 6B 8MHK3716 16t sprocket

A 1M 4MYH08 20t miter gears

S1086Z-048DS068 68t spur

SDP/si is where a lot of Custom Works early parts came from :-)

And the wheels. Learned a lot drawing these- thanks for the advice J-Sou. They are not meant to be exact replicas, I modified the diameter and widths to make them more compatible with standard donuts.

These were printed draft quality as I was just checking fitment. Not as pretty as my other parts

Yes maybe they're draft quality and not as pretty as the molded parts however I bet you could chuck them in a lathe and, after spending a few minutes with some sandpaper, make them look as good as the molded examples.
Personally, I wouldn't be averse to investing a little effort to perform some post-printing machining work if it will help to bridge the aesthetics gap between the two manufacturing processes.
As parts continue to be discontinued by AE and other manufactures, the search for alternative sources for new parts becomes more important and 3D printing is still the best alternative imho. Granted it's not perfect but it's getting there.
