Better yet, Mr. Clean the yellow soap stuff does the same. Not as caustic either....

Re: Removing Chrome from nylon wheels?
I used both brake fluid and Easy-Off to remove both paint and chrome from wheels. I will say that neither did the job "lickety split"! Haha
With the Turbo Optima wheels (both painted and chromed versions), areas in the little depressions that imitate lug nuts were very pesky and required a few nights of soaking followed by scraping with an X-Acto knife. But, I'd suggest Easy-Off works better than brake fluid.

Castrol Super Clean. Soak for 24 hours and it should fall off.

I didn't have much luck with acetone on some satin traxxas wheels.
the easy off oven cleaner yellow did the trick, so I guess the plating was aluminum. give that a try.

Re: Removing Chrome from nylon wheels?
Just make sure the wheels are nylon and not any part plastic--acetone will turn plastic into goosh. I tried acetone to remove some paint from an already broken Marui Galaxy wheel just to see what happened. Within seconds, the paint was stripped clean. 5 more seconds and the wheel was turning to goosh.
Easy-Off is safer if you have any doubts.

I've never removed plating from rims but I've removed paint using brake fluid and it worked ok.
