Dirt Oval: Superior SRP-1

Post by Eau Rouge »

Hey guys, I'm glad I found this board, because I was about ready to start up another community for this very topic. :D

In the past few years, I have found that I enjoy the part of R/C racing that doesn't include racing anymore. And I really enjoy the old stuff from my past in R/C, too. I have been slowly trying to acquire cars and parts of my own days gone by, and it's GREAT to see others taking part, too.

This was the first project I started a few years ago, and the original photos from the build-up. It's in a bit more of a state of race-completeness now, though I need to take some more photos of the car as it sits.

This is an SRP-1, which was loosely based on the design of the Custom Works Dominator of the mid 80s. It's slightly shorter and wider than a Dom, and made entirely of magnesium, titanium and carbon fiber. It's a replica of the exact car I raced myself in the late 80s.

Currently the car sits with a Twister 11double "Annihilator" mod motor, Team Smooth 7-cell SCE battery, Novak T1x speed controller and receiver, TKW capped race tires and a Premier/Twister Super Wedge body—which is slightly different from these photos.

More current photos soon...

Wow, that thing is awesome. It just screams "I'm all business". There's no BS to be found anywhere on that thing. And it's exotic. That's one bad arse oval machine you have there. 8)

I also love the era appropriate paint job. Always loved that color combo back in the day. 8)

Thanks! The new and current paint job on the Twister body (hasn't been completed yet) replicates the photo in the background of the body-on shot, which is exactly as I ran in '88/'89.

With my local racetrack gasping for air, I decided to focus a bit more on my multiple stagnatn restoration projects—most specifically, the SRP-1 dirt oval car.

I figured I'd shoot some current photos of the status as it sits now from the recent once-over and details that have been attended to. Still not finished, but I'll keep this thread updated as I continue...

Hey Doug, the pics are gone for some reason , but the later picks show red SCR batteries, not yellow SCE's. (Well those were the colours sanyo anyway. Pardon me if I got it wrong.)
I remember somebody on this site looking for vintage cells, was that you?

Yeah, I'm always looking for vintage Sanyo SCEs in good to new shape. Been the toughest part of any of my projects. NOS motors, ESCs, receivers, servos, bodies... all relatively findable. But vintage batteries are a beotch to find new.

I fixed all of the early attachements. They should all work fine now.

Awesome indeed,
Promisse me to never get me one of these: I wouldn't be able to retain myself and would change it to belt drive, 3 cells on either side...
Man, that would upset some folks around here
(The last reason I'd do it for)
