Hey guys, I figured I'd ask here first to see if someone has experience before trying it for myself.
I stripped the bevel gear splines on both axles in my Tamiya crawler today, which are the first major parts I've destroyed in the entire time I've owned it.
My question is whether or not I can braze the powdered metal gears to the steel axles, and will it hold up to abuse? I can pre-heat either of the parts if needed. I'm not sure what exact metal the powdered gears are made of and their melting point. Any help would be appreciated.
If they are both steel, shouldn't be a problem at all. I would preheat the powdered metal parts to help 'bleed' out any oils in the metal. Probably something like a silver solder would be great, although probably more expensive than the parts you are fixing, ie, not just regular old yellow brass rod with flux on it, but a silver brazing alloy.
Ok, thinking of building my own chassis with the plenty of stock I got when I picked up my KRP lot. I was told Kendrick silver soldered his chassis and my friend brazed his. Looking at torches at the hardware store left me scratching my head....

Thank you lowgear, that's exactly the type of info I was searching for. Now I was told Mr. Lane used acetalin (sp?) and I see this kit uses mapp and o2. I'm gonna check into this!

The bulkhead will be most difficult. The Bart's parts arms are still available and maybe someone will sell you a pair of atlas arm mounts for the front.

I've been wanting to build a true heavy metal RC10 for quite some time. Well, I decommissioned the RC10 Scorcher a while ago and some of those parts went to this project. Namely the unusual transmission. It's a Stealth transmission in an aluminum...

Check with local sheetmetal shops, specifically those who do architectural metalwork. I get all kinds of tasty things from mine. I've also go specialty metal dealers (look in yellow pages ) that have lots of things to make you drool. And I recently...
Does anyone know how I would go about getting some new gearbox sideplates cut from aluminium or steel? I don't have the drawings (would Schumacher have them on file?) but I do have some used plates which could be used as templates. Does anyone have...

Any number of hand tools can do the job, if you've got larger equipment, all the easier. If you've got nothing and a few bucks in your pocket, you could find a small machine/fabrication shop that could cut them out...
