Reliving my preteen years, got me another RC10 gold pan

Post by artfull dodger »

When I was round 11/12 yrs old I got into RC buggy racing at a local hobby shop/track with a gold pan RC10 that I bought with my summers mowing income. I sold it in my late teens when real cars and girls became the focus of life. I built the chassis up and the shop painted the body/wing to match the box artwork for me. Fast forward to this past winter. Got into an RC car discussion with a good friend and we got into my racing years and that RC10. He said he had one in is attic and if I wanted it, I could have it. Winter was very cold and college school work prevented any further action on it. But this past week we finaly got up in the attic and got down his old RC10 gold pan and a Lynx carpet car. The RC10 is in good shape, body and wing are original according to him, might only have 3-4 hours of use on the car. Came with a Futaba Magnum Jr RC set up with ESC and BEC circuit in the reciever. I bought a new 5000mah battery and charged it with his newer charger for his RC boat. The RC10 took right off. I took off the street tires and reinstalled the knobby rears and ribbed front. I have 2 extra sets, knobby front with strange looking rear criss cross tread, and a pair of spiked rears. I plan to pick up a new body, hopefully one of the box artwork painted ones I see online but I will make one mod, working lights. Trying to find KC looking ones to keep the look of the car in the 80's. Or I may use PIAA lights that are for my friends new Axiel Wraith. The RC10 will live an easy life, just getting run around my yard and cul-de-sac, bringing back lots of memories. Might have to build a small dirt track in my back yard to. Here is some pics of it. Is the chassis stamping that I read about under the motor on the pan? I dont see any stamping underneith the motor pan area. Mike

Forgot to put, this girl sat in his attic for 25 years, so some of the tires have some flat spots, espicaly one of the spiked rears. Gonna have to set them out in the sun to warm them up and try to get the flat spot out. I am trying to figure out what motor is in it, stock or aftermarket. I have been out of the hobby way to long. On a side note, he took his Lynx carpet car up to the local shop to get new spit battery packs and new tires installed to try and get it running. He also bought an Axiel Wraith rock racer and is looking at a RC10 b4.1 RTR to run with me. We are planning a trip to the Indiana Dunes state park for some sand dune running, gonna have to find some paddle tires for the RC10! Cheers Mike

Broke it today, snaged a tree root and snapped a steering linkage part, dont see any on ebay, so I am in need of one asap. Thus are the hazzards of running a vintage buggy these days. I really wish AE would do a reissue of the gold pan era RC10. I just dont care for the new version. Tamaya has reissued the classics, time for AE to do the same. I finaly found one OEM on ebay and it looks like RPM did a retrofit set up. Gonna try and win one of them atleast. Mike

The stock steering "savers" show up on eBay quite a bit.
Here is a std set on eBay in case you missed these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/associated-RC10-buggy-vintage-steering-rack-/140943951679?pt=US_Radio_Control_Control_Line&hash=item20d0ea073f
$0.99 now, but has a few days left.

I'd recommend considering a steering upgrade. Moving to a good ball bearing steering makes a huge difference (or did for me).
I really like the Houge BB set but couldn't find any when putting together my last car. There is a set on eBay now, but I expect them to go for more than I am willing to pay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Houge-Steering-Bellcranks-for-the-Team-Associated-RC10-/140942447808?pt=US_Radio_Control_Control_Line&hash=item20d0d314c0
I had a set long ago (only have one side now ???), and really like these.

A&L makes and excellent set also. That's what I wound up with this time. And they still make them:
http://vintageteamaandl.com/steering.htm
I applaud them for continuing to support us. :D And I like these, just may have to dye them black.

Oh and here are some RPM ones. I've never seen these before and have no idea the quality, but I've had good results with RPM stuff:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/associated-RC-10-vintage-rc10-buggy-RPM-steering-rack-/140941557775?pt=US_Radio_Control_Control_Line&hash=item20d0c5800f
Sorry, I might have to make a bid on these. :D

I'm really not an expert on this, as many here are. Just saying I really like these (both the Houge and the A&L) and you might want to consider one of them. If you search this site, there are at least one other really nice set made in alloy, that I can't find right now. I bet some of the more knowledgeable here can point you to them if you want.

With any of the newer BB slopless setups, there is no servo saver built in, so you probably want to also run a quality servo saver like:

Thanks for the replys. I did find all but the houge set up. I also plan to bid on that RPM set, there is another one on there that ends in a few days. I dont mind the stock set up if I can avoid the trees! I am thinking that I need to find the stock bumper till I see if my reflexes come back. They definatly are not as sharp at 40 like they were when I was 12. I managed to patch mine back together using a copper top plate clamped down with the ball mounts, then I "gooed" it back together using an adhesive I use in my model train hobby, it sticks to anything. That will give me the ablity to lightly run the car till I get new parts. Over time I will build up some spares for when stuff breaks. I will remember to pick up one of those servo savers if I win one of the RPM set ups. Mike

It looks like a great car. If you need a bumper I have one that is in the junk box you can have. PM me if you want it and I will send it to you. How about some photos of the bottom of the car?

That original body is too nice to use. You should buy a new Protech before you mess this one up.
. . . you have Associated Green Slime for brains. And not even new Green Slime, but old gooped out Green Slime.

If I go out to bash around with friends, I will put the red body and its wing on. If I am just running alone/cruising for fun, she will have the box art body on it. That box art body cost me enough, I'm gonna use it to some degree! I am also going to try to get the OEM style part that I broke. Trying to keep it mostly all stock since I dont plan to beat on it or race it. I will PM ya for the bumper. Mike

It sounds like you have a bit of a problem. You have an expensive body and an irreplaceable body.
My suggestion is still the same. That way, you'll have a cheap, replaceable body.

In time. I plan to talk to one of our custom painters that does model trains in all scales and see if he can do one of the pro line bodies in the box art colors and for what price. If its not to bad, I will get one done up and keep the OEM body for show and shines and winter down time in the display cabinet. The red body has been run, rolled and used, so I dont mind using it for outdoor play time. I do need to get the wing painted to somewhat match. He used a dark metalic red. I am not sure whether to do the wing in all red, red with white side panels or all white. All white with sponser decals would be the easiest solution. I did pull the motor today to clean it. I have an "A" gold pan car. What was the years for that marking on the pan? I also relocated the antenna to the pan area near the reciever so I can find a body mount post for the rear of the body. Only friction is keeping the body on right now. the front mount is there, but the body is fouling the two silver support rods at the front to sit down on the front body mount. My homebrew steering repair held up for 20 min of street and rough grass running. Cheers MIke

Your car looks like a Cadillac. Without the box, there's no telling if it's a Cadillac or a late Edinger. It was probably made in 1985, 1986, or 1987.

kewl, I need to take some new pics as I relocated the ESC to the pan opposite the reciever. It now helps keep the battery in the middle of the pan. Still need to shorten up the motor lead wires and clean up the wiring/tie it back so it looks nice and neat. Mike

Ok, I educated myself on the differances of the early gold pan cars. Based on my reading, I would say I have an "A" stamp cadillac car. I have the Team Associated marked tires, long mounting tubes for the wing, stamped shock strut mounting frames and the color is the darker shade of gold. We havent found his good charger yet. And we found the box for his Lynx 1 carpet car. So there is hope to find the original box. I am going out to his place tomorrow to try and find the charger and look for the original box in his attic. We didnt have much light to work with last time. Gonna take my mag light this time! Mike
