Ayk 566b super trail resto

Post by DennisM »

I´ve always been fascinated by the looks of the gearbox on the 566b, so of course I had to have one. For racing, I´d pick the Scorpion over it anyday, but still a very cool and iconic buggy. The main issues with the 566b, now a days, are the price and parts - When You finally scrape enough money together to buy one of the cheapest, You end up with something that needs parts. Expensive, and in some cases, non existing parts.

The chassis rails was badly bend and the previous owner tried to fix it by fitting two aluminum plates beneth it. This resulted in many extra holes and half broken rails. After 18 months of searching on the bay, nothing had come up, so I bought some 6x6mm aluminum rods and copied the original rails.

The pivot axles for the lower front suspension arms had reached some fantastic angles which seemed unfit for use. First I thought that it was supposed to be like this, but after comparing with my newly purchased, good conditioned, 566 truck, they needed to be replaced. Unhardned steel rods would bend again, and learning how to harden them, wasn´t really on my list.
So I threaded some Savage 4mm hardened hinge pins I had laying around. Cutting thread in allready hardened steel isn´t the cleverest thing to do. Glad my tools were made before Thürmer outsourced to China.

Another problem is a broken upper front suspension arm - Welding is out of the question, so at the moment I´m doing tryouts with chemical metal.

Jsourbeck on eBay has some parts but they pricey. I would agree that parts rarely come up. Look forward to seeing how your buggy turns out

Thanks for the heads up -
I´ve been looking at his Super trail auctions the past six months, just waiting for the prices to drop or hoping that they just by accident, got shipped to me.

Thanks Jeff, much appreciated.
Guess I´d better take a swing at Jims stash before it goes away.

I'm also trying to fix a 566b. In my case I'd like to install new more modern shocks. The ones I have don't work very well. I bought a set of RC18T dampers. The length is just fine but the shock shaft is quite small. Not too sure It will survive (planning on driving the car at one point).

By the way the front blue plate is not stock. Did you make it or it was aftermarket? Good job on the chassis bars...

Thanks for the kind words.
Yes, the blue is a modern touch, the old one had a lot of extra holes. Blue seems to be my favourite color

How about Tamiya SRB shocks with coil overs? wouldn´t that be better?

Not too sure. I think they may be too long...

For the rear they´ll suit fine - just 10mm instead of 8mm. The SRB shock bodies are even shorter than the Ayk.
But I agree, for the front, they´d be way to long.
If I were to run it, I´d change the front springs to a softer version.

Small update -
Made a new bumper support, the old one had too many holes.
The bumper was well used on this buggy, so much it had worn off an inch of each side  So now I´m looking for a 7,265 mm delrin rod.
I´ve also installed the new front arms which made my day.
The mess on the work bench isn´t mine, just holding it for a friend.
