RC10T4 Throwback

Post by RC10th »

The last of the Associated rear motor trucks......

it will basically be a mirror build of my other truck without all of the extra goodies.

I started with a cheap low use T4.1 RTR.

20210126_212216-1024x576.jpg

First order was to strip it down to bits and pieces and build it back up. Everything was pretty straight forward up till step 5.

20210323_204124-1024x576.jpg

Now's when things start to get a bit different. The stock tower on the left and a fiberglass tower that Jeff made on the right

And the tower mounted up....

Niki drew up the front bumper mount/skid plate which adapts a standard 10T bumper to fit the T4. The whole thing fits seamlessly. Due to the prices for original parts I opted for a 3D printed bumper instead of an original.

Thanks :D

Moving onto the rear......

Stock shock tower on the top, Jeffs shock tower and mount on the bottom.

20210323_214359-1024x576.jpg

Niki drew up some extended rear body mounts as they needed to be longer.

20210324_231321-1024x576.jpg

And everything mounted to the chassis....

This little bracket is quite the pain to make with nothing but hand files and a dremel. This one took me a few hours.... a mill would have made life much easier

20210324_230420-1024x576.jpg

Heres how it attaches to the shock tower mount

20210324_232258-1024x576.jpg

The transmission is pretty unexciting, basically all stock with the exception of transmission brace mounts made by Niki.

Thanks.....

It is very similar to the other truck but doesn't have all the fancy parts. I think it will still turn out pretty cool in the end and capture the vintage feel.

Transmission and trans brace installed, quite a bit different than the original design.

Rear suspension just about finished. Again, nothing exciting, I'll eventually swap out the dogbones with CVD's when I get around to ordering a set.

Next up....... Shocks

Since this is a cheap build and shock collars are hard to find these days the 3D printed parts will do. They look pretty good I think.

20210326_202131-1024x576.jpg

A set of used shocks, they aren't perfect as they have spring rub, but since this is a runner it doesn’t matter.

Mounted to the car.....

Battery mounting strap made by Jeff.....

20210326_205016-1024x576.jpg

Servo installed with 3D printed servo mounts....

20210326_210954-1024x576.jpg

Now the fun part..... I stickered up a Reedy Sonic M3 motor to look like an old sonic. The pink Ultra Series is probably more fitting for this car but since the other one has a pink motor I thought I'd use the green one on this one.

20210326_215632-1024x576.jpg

20210326_223612-1024x576.jpg

And I found a used frosted gear cover from my pile of parts. The new ones are all clear.

Receiver and 3D printed antenna mount in place. The antenna mount is just decorative and really serves no purpose other than aesthetics.

20210326_224451-1024x576.jpg

I put the battery in place to get a feel for how the car will turn out..... pretty fitting I think. It definitely has that vintage feel.

20210326_224848-1024x576.jpg

These aren't the exact tires I will use but again just to get an idea.

Thanks, all that's left is to cut out and paint a body and "modify" the sensor cable on the ESC. It's actually the ESC I originally bought for the other car. The pictures and description were for the standard version (Hobbywing V3.1) but I didn't pay attention that the part number was for the waterproof version. Being the waterproof version seems to have a non removable sensor cable and is way too short I need to cut and splice it...... No real biggie except I still need to find some 1.5mm-ish heat shrink tubing before I tackle that task.
