Orangemazda’s sneak peek WOIN Ultima

Post by orangemazda »

I’m too excited to keep it under wraps since today I finely got the transmission to work properly. Here it is so far:

Sweet slipper setup and 48-pitch gears!

And here’s the chassis and arms I’ll be using:

Also, I figured I’d post it now since, by the time I finish it, Kyosho will have re-released the Ultima and it will probably have a slipper clutch in it. I wanted to debut mine first. Lol!

It took a lot of fiddling. The most difficult part was that the fact that the Ultima case takes 8x14x4 bearings and the re-release Optima takes 10x15x4 bearings. My first thought was to have the diff halves milled down. Then I was looking around on the AVID website and found 10x15x4 flanged bearings. So I drilled out the case and loaded the new bearings from the inside. I also had to make some upper shaft shims. I was able to find some perfect aluminum shaft at the hardware store that has a 5mm ID. I had to shorten a couple of the Optima shims as well. Open up the upper bearing holes so that the spacer/shims ride on the actual bearings, etc. Quite a bit of fiddling and fitting but I’m happy with how it came out.

You can't appreciate enough how much easier this got with todays battery sizes. The things I had to do to fit "full" size stick packs inthere ...

You're going to have to move the tower a good 5mm forward, and the shocks behind it if you're serious about using those rear arms.

Perhaps. I was inspired with an idea after looking at these freakishly long RPM arm shock mounts. We’ll see how it plays out. I’m not a huge fan of shocks behind shock towers on vintage cars but if that’s what it takes, I’ll burn that bridge when I get there.

Also Mr. ED, i’ll probably message you and have a conversation about Kyosho CVD’s and various Kyosho rear hubs again. I’m really inspired by your car and SHY’s car too.

Judging from the hub carriers, they are monster truck conversion pieces that we're meant to use with yokomo universals for Rc10.

Who made that conversion? Is there a thread on one of these on the forum?
(I don't visit the associated section as frequent as the others  )
