Yo-clone-oh Dogfighter

Post by Dadio »

It had to happen eventually , I've been fighting the urge but I've given up fighting . The Yo-Clone-Oh Dogfighter is a 3D printing project comprising of both faithfully copied parts that may not be strong enough for lots of rough and tumble and also some key parts that have been reinforced or upgraded in design .
there's quite a bit already done but a huge chunk in the shape of the gearbox that's still to come . Here's what i have so far .

and I'm very pleased with the front lower arms that came off the printer today , original part on the left .

I have a top arm printing now so up front that just leaves the C hub and a sprocket .
If a jobs not worth doing then its certainly not worth doing well.

Thanks ,still a load to do.
The C hub was a fail , I got the KPI wrong , its too steep an angle and has to be printed with support , so a redesign to get the angle right and another version redesigned to be stronger and easier to print ,nearly all of it will be PET-G although I'm thinking of experimenting with some ABS , not tried ABS yet .

Now with stronger and easy printing c hubs

they still need a little support but its a lot better and where I've added material it makes it stronger without fouling anything

I got the battery tray modelled up today and I'm waiting on some yellow filament in order to print it , a big sheet of Kydex arrived today to make a chassis from , now I have to decide which chassis to make , its 3 mm Kydex so probably the early chassis with the big bumper , that would protect the suspension better as well , only down side is I'd like to do the later corrugated chassis with the small bumper ....

The battery tray in yellow ABS and the steering components also in ABS ,there's no servo saver as such and I've beefed it up a bit , also not quite the right yellow but hey ho .

I've got the wheels modeled up as well so I'll test print one later , I'm printing a second battery tray right now as my stock Dogfighter had a Shapeways one fitted and I don't like the finish so the first one is replacing it and the second is for this project .

I got the first wheel printed and I'm pretty happy with it , its printed with the outer face down on the bed with a load of support for the offset outer face ,I was unsure what the surface finish of the ABS would be like after removing the support so I also printed a 1mm thick disk to fit inside like a hub cap , its an exact match for the perforations of the wheel design and held in place by the two screws that hold the wheel on , it works really well , I'll post pictures in the morning .

Yea but I'm running out of parts to draw up before I tackle the gearbox , I'm pleased with how its going though .
I'm not sure what to do once its done either , it would be nice to sell it in some way , either as a kit of parts or the STL files , I'm hesitant to sell the STL files though because it can then be copied by any unscrupulous person , or I could just be totally ulturistic and stick it on thingiverse .

Upload to shapeways. Let them print the parts, that way the strength is great and no need for supports/removal/etc. You then put them in your store and mark them up a few bucks- whatever you want them to sell for. They handle everything for you. When you sell one, the money you have requested per part goes into a kitty and if you hit $35 at the end of the period they PayPal you the dough. If you don’t, it rolls over to the next period.

This makes your parts available, and ensures that you get paid for your time and research, and also takes all the weight off you as well
