Metal Final Pinion for Ultima, etc. - Another Option??
Rather than buying the hardened final pinion (OT76?) for $35-45, why can't I spend $7 on a regular 32p 19T pinion gear like this...
...Then chuck it up in my lathe, and bore out the ID to the correct diameter? It looks like the set screw would end up right on the flat machined on the top shaft of the gearbox, and everything should be hunky-dory.
Has anyone tried this?

I have used the Robinson racing pinion and the bore is already 5mm, just pop it on and go
I think Markt73 did this first

Cool.
I just bought a 5mm bore 19t 32p pinion on the 'bay. It will go into the "Crawltima," so we'll see how it goes...

Same boat here. Im building up 2 junked out turbo optimas and another beagle,, and was wondering if the 1/8 pinion gears would fit in the final pinion position. Looks like 32 pitch again on the primary spur and pinion too.

Yep, works like a charm. You need some spacers and a washer or 2. There's a photo of my setup in my Optima thread:

Cool.
The one I show in the other thread didn't require any other parts. It really fits like it is meant to be there (in the Ultima, at least). I recommend using that specific one if someone wants to try this.

Reviving this thread re beagle pinions. My beagles got a 15t pinion, anyone know the do? Looks 32dp largish teeth compared to a 0.6 metric.
Would that be the same as optima pinions?

Thanks for re-sharing that topic, Mark. I'm lucky to have a few spare Hard Final Pinions, as well as an aftermarket Thorp gear...but I know I sure as hell wouldn't pay what sellers are asking for those, for the past half-decade or so. If I ever need to buy another, I'll be going with your suggestion.markbt73 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 03, 2015 12:31 am Yep, works like a charm. You need some spacers and a washer or 2.
