Operation Blackout Super Astute

Post by sandkil »

So I’ve had this rere Super Astute for a while now.
Bought it from a friend who bought it from a friend who bought it from a friend... I think I’m number five on it and it’s never been run.
Never really known what to do with it. Must be demons in it as no one really held on to it.
Though I give it a shot so I started with a hot black brew on wheels, some gears and steering knuckles. Also did some Birchwood Super Blue treatments on various screws, nuts and links and Birchwood Aluminum Black on a few aluminum bits.

Looking forward to the gearbox build then coxbros1.

Front end coming along nicely.... for the sharp-eyed, yes I did use a pair of AE (sorry!) steering links as the originals are stainless steel and will not take the Birchwood Super Blue treatment.

Sandkil, looking forward to this build, one of my favorite and best handling 2wd cars ever, regardless of everyone else" opinion. Like derek said, that tranny is just a work of art. This was only car it ever appeared on, which makes it even more classic. Need full report on your opinion of it when completed please.

Tranny done!
I have to admit that it’s an impressive gearbox.
Something different from AE. Just as much gears on the outside as on the inside...sort of.
BUT!!!

Did some cheating on the gearbox plate.
I haven’t been able to find a company that can help me with anodizing so.. airbrushed enamel paint (Humbrol 85).
I also made a new foam pad/sponge sheet that covers the whole battery bay.

The Hi-cap shocks doesn’t go that well with the “Blackout” theme, but looks way better than the stock shocks.
Anyone know of black springs for these shocks?
Next is trying to find body, under tray and gear cover... The shortage of materials is really showing in all categories in the world it seems.

Excellent. It looks mean. There probably aren't enough "blackout" builds, but it would be cool to see them all in one thread.
Hope you're doin' something fun.

With a few upgrades to stronger plastics I see Super Astute as good as any race buggy of time. Add in a carbon chassis and IFMAR champ. I might go so far as to say no need for the Dyna Storm evolution. If nothing else, it sure is sexy to look at. :D

Something completely different. Something I’ve never tried before.
I hope it will be doable.

Absolutely! Will handle with the best of them. Just need a bit stronger plastics is all.
