Tires for 3-piece wheels

Post by galaxie292 »

So, is it impossible these days to find tires for the old 3-piece wheels? Starting to realize from threads that most modern tires apparently don’t work. Was hoping I wasn’t going to have to convert my 10t over to 3/16, but is that the only or best way at this point? And, does anything need to be done to the front to accept modern wheels? (I realize the rear conversion has been explain on here somewhere. I can dig it up.)

yes, most new tires today won't work on your 3pc wheels. I've seen guys glue them...not that I recommend that.

you don't necessarily have to convert your 10t over to 3/16 axles. back when I first ran my gt the lhs had a boatload of 3/16 wheels but no 1/4 so we just used a 1/4 drill bit and did a little reaming. Worked, but I wasn't exactly concerned about the fact I couldn't use these wheels on the smaller axle anymore. Never had any issues and at my caliber of running never worried about it too badly :lol

there are different front wheel conversions. some are hard to find now a days and some parts are drying up faster than old stuff does. There should be multiple threads on it here on the board. Try using the search button with rc10 front wheel hex conversion and choose from there. personally I don't get the hex conversion since there are plenty of wheels out there for bearings anymore for those that don't race on the professional level but i realize its a preference and part of the hunt so I get that side also.

Maybe post some pics of your wheels and axles. Vintage wheels and tyres are a nightmare and some kind of 12mm hex conversion might be best. I don't know about 10t but have done hex conversion on hirobo and tamiya.
Also a selection of old wheels and tyres shows there was no standardisation back in the day. Seems each model had its own wheel set up and a rarity of spares. What comes up on eBay occasionally is v expensive.
Whereas 12mm hex wheels v.cheap.

Factory Works rear hex adapters fit the 1/4" axles.

There are a few options for the front. I believe that the Custom Works front conversion fits with few modifications.

I also have a 10T that uses Traxxas parts. They also require some grinding. I only tried it because I had the parts laying around.
Always looking for new and interesting ways to waste money.

Thanks man - this really helps. Was able to find the rear adapters, will start poking around to figure out the front.

Got a boatload of parts coming in the next week or so... with any luck, I’ll be up and running soon enough. Excited to fire it up!

BTW, a quick old-guy “get off my lawn” moment: what a load of crap by the RC wheel companies to try and make wheels “disposable” and having to glue your tires.

I realize that’s probably a very old take, but it’s new to me. Lmao. Guess I’ll grab a cheap heat gun somewhere to remove them.

Modern-ish tires have webbing in bead area where the 3 piece rim clamps the bead, thus they don't work.

You can reuse your glued wheels by putting them in an ice cream container with 1/2" of acetone. If the tires are shot but the insets are good cut them out first.

There's a guy on Facebook (private group, you have to ask to join) named Shawn Miller, he runs a page called RC10 Vintage Chop Shop...He has a whole bunch of old stuff.

Edit* I really should read what year the original post was before I respond.

Front wheels are dead easy. Just use the Jconcepts wheel

Your old bearing even fit.

Rear wheels will work just as easy but you need patience.
jc racing in England makes modern wheels for the old truck
https://www.jcracingproducts.co.uk/dished-rc10-14-truck-wheels

Factoryworks may have them as well.
you can always find vintage 1/4" rpm wheel for 2.2" tires on the regular on e-bay

with those wheels you can use any modern 2.2" tire
