Rc10 6-gear in modern astroturf
Anyone run a vintage RC10 on astroturf? I am thinking of bringing mine as a fun track experiment but I’m not sure if the 6-gear transmission would hold. The class is any 2wd buggy with 17.5t ROAR spec motor.

The overall specs seem well within the 6 gear capabilities. The high traction of the track and the torque of a brushless motor are pretty extreme. However the idler gears are the weak point being the only plastic gears in the transmission. If your ESC has a soft launch feature you may want to use that in place of the missing slipper. You can make sure that you don't blast the throttle on takeoff as well.Lizardking wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 1:24 pm Anyone run a vintage RC10 on astroturf? The transmission should hold up to a 17.5. Even on the vintage idler gears I would only expect that they would wear fast, not blow up.

Have you done the out drive bearing mod? I think it's really helpful to keep the out drive gears squared up and meshing correctly with the idler gears.

There are a bunch of folks racing 6 gears on carpet, but only you know how hard you are on your cars. Take it to the track on a practice day. Worse case scenario, a pair of 6613 idler gears are only $8, $12 if you need them shipped... cheap insurance.
Good 2.4GHz transmitters come with programmable throttle curves.
But there's also 6614 heavy duty Idler gears:
Or RW Racing 515 Steel Idler Gears if you can find them:
At that point I'd look at adding outdrive bearings like Frankentruck mentioned.

Now that the outdrives are in production, it's cheaper to cut them down into new steel idler gears then find vintage sets.Dangeruss wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 6:01 pm There are a bunch of folks racing 6 gears on carpet, but only you know how hard you are on your cars.
