My RC10T project(s)
Hey fellas!
After 16 years I finally got a hold of an original RC10T. From the shocks it appears to be an RC10ST with a bearing upgrade. It's got a bent chassis, broken rear A-arm mount, missing screws thoughout, bent tie-rods, and a cracked Nissan Body; its beautiful.
Before restoring it I'm going to give it one really hard race night at our local track, and whatever survives will be what I plan on keeping. I've been taking pictures of the project and will try to post some as I go along.
Whatever white parts survive I will be using for a future shelf queen, but I've decided after having so many issues with my former T4 and SC10 platforms (RIP), that I will be doing what several people have been doing here and that is extend the original RC10 to aprox. 3" in wheelbase to be used in the Short-course 2WD class.
A neighbor at work does race trucks and digs the RC scene, so I thought the easiest way to do it it so simply make an extended nose plate with longer nose bars (after I've straightened the chassis). After changing out the white, discontinued parts I'll be picking up some RPM goodies to race with. With my current Slash 2WD the bolt patterns of the RPM front a rear bumpers are extremely close, so I'll be experimenting in the weeks ahead, along with nerf bars that I can adapt to the stock chassis holes. So far I'll be using Traxxas stock motor, ESC, and most likely traxxas front and possibly rear axles with Traxxas short course wheels and tires as a starting point, and plan to add a 1st gen SC10 body later.
I've seen some interesting SC projects here, but not to the finished product.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks!

Re: RC10T to RC10-SCT
There are a few extended chassis SC10t's here, one added the extra material in the center- and one extended the nose- If I were doing this right now I would add the length from the rear bulkhead back, like Clandra did with the XXX-t conversion before the XXXSC came out-

Hey Fellas!
Well, here's the beginning of the project. The hard-to-find Nissan body was hand-painted. One broken rear a-arm mount, which will be fixed for now with fancy zip-ties. Be putting in a few extra screws into it
I forgot how much Associated stuff I had! I'll be posting phase 2 soon; make'r run!

Re: RC10T to RC10-SCT
Got it together!
Used some electronics and spare parts I had lying around. Found an 87 tooth spur gear in perfect shape, a spare Traxxas ESC out of a Traxxas Slash, a Hitec metal gear HS servo with an aluminum adapter from my former SC10. I also found a spare MIP CVD end from an RC10T3 and a spare 1/4" MIP axle from my RC10!
Gonna use a new Slash 15 turn 550 motor for testing with an 18 tooth pinion. Got a gear cover too, but wouldn't fit with the motor's excessively long motor shaft!
The motor sits REALLY close to the servo due to the bent chassis. Put a 2S 5000maH 20 c pack with it. Amazingly the ride hieght and dampening feel perfect for what I've got in it!
Just took it in the parking lot for a spin, and I can't beleive how much it drive like my original RC10; understeer until you let off the throttle! Couldn't adjust the diff with the cover stuck, so I'll beat on it as-is for now:)
Now for the next test; track day!

Re: RC10T to RC10-SCT
Thanks for your comments Charlie!
I think I saw the unfinished project of the extended center chassis, that one was sweet. I really don't want to cut nito the chassis, I figure if I do I might as well make a new Chassis. I think I'll be extending the front.
Is there a link on that one?
Also, is that the better, official name for it? SC10T?
Thanks!

Re: RC10T to RC10-SCT
It survived the bash test! My fancy zip ties held up! Had a ball stud loosen up, but an easy fix.
think it only maxed out at about 20mph, but that's normal with the stock slash motor and a 20c battery. Seeing as our tracks average speed on our 700 feet track is only 10mph, the 145' straight is my only concern.
The dirt hawgs tires worked better than I thought! We'll see if they will let me hook up on the track!

Re: RC10T to SC10T
Fixed an old gear cover my cousin gave me.
He though it would be a neat trick for his old RC10 to cut the bottom of his gear cover off to let rocks fall out. This is the same reason all traxxas 2wd owners replace their gear covers!
anywho I took a piece of lexan and cut it, and glued it to the gear cover in and out. Should keep all rocks out in the future.
The glue is the stuff, called E6000. First thing the 800 number tells you to do to hang up and dial 911 in an emergency. They sell it on their website in sizes big enough to seal high pressure vents and machinery for industrial applications. After doing some research I found the clear tube version of it at Micheal's craft stores for $5!
With my Dremel tool handy I cut off about 1/8" of the motor shaft off of the stock 12 turn 550 Traxxas motor to get the gear cover to fit. Any other motor fits fine, but the traxxas can motors always have very long motor shafts. Luckily I'm only going at most 20mph, so I'm not overly concerned on balance.

Re: RC10T to SC10T
Hey!
The RPM bumper fits pretty close! They make this bumper for the SC10 now, but this bumper is off of the slash 4X4 (which is the same one on the slash 2WD, but with a kick-up plate in the kit). The nice thing about these bumper is that they require no upper link on the bumper, and I can confirm they work! I'll have to elongate the holes a bit to get it to fit, but that's it. I'd prefer this method to fabricating everything up in the world.
Later I'll have to figure out the cleanest way to add a rear bumper, most likely a Slash 2WD rear bumper assembly.
Then there's the nerf bars, and I'm really not sure about those yet. I don't think there's a set on the market that will work well enough, so I'll have to check in with raw materials first.

Re: RC10T to SC10T
I took it to the track! I found some old pro-97's that I threw on that had decent tread left.
Man I enjoyed it! I've been waiting years to see this thing fly around our city track, and it didn't disappoint. It jumped well, it made it through the woops better than my slash 4X4, it had great turn-in before turns. I dug it.
With the motor and battery combo it was a tad slower than I would like. It's a good 2 pounds lighter than my slash 4X4, and with that it was able to clear almost as many jumps because of that. I think a good combo would be a higher discharge rating on the pack, since I could only get a 20C 2 cell 7.4 to fit in the stock battery tray. $0C or higher and I could deal with the motor.
The run finally did stop though, not because of the battery, but because after 10 minutes the pinion started coming loose. I'll have to pull the gear cover off to see if the ol'school white spur survived. also the front steering's pitman arm was getting slack, which I didn't notice on the track (probably could have raced another pack before I noticed
. Everything else held up on the car! Not bad for a car that spent the last 10 years in someones garage, and had some electronics thrown in it!
All-in-all a great run! I even got a good "box cover" shot.

Hello,
I was reading this thread to get some tips for my RC10SCT project I'm getting ready to start and to my disapointment, this project isn't finished. Any plans to do another update?

Re: My RC10T project(s)
Hello!
Just an update (finally) on my RC10T project. For now I've put the short course conversion on hold; I didn't want to get too technical by extending the wheelbase. PLUS, I really like racing my SC10 4X4, so I've decided to keep this vehicle in it's current form, and probably clean it up for the shelf.
What I did do was pick up another RC10T thanks to a freind with A LOT of RPM stuff on it. This vehicle is in better condition, so I've swapped the 2 trucks to get all stock parts for one, and all modified parts on another (so that it can be raced).
For the new RC10T I didn't want to go out and buy tires again in the 2.2 that I had. SO, I converted (1) RC10T to short course tires from my SC10 4X4, which are the same now as the SC10RS. kept the same 1/4" axles in the rear for now, but drilled out some traxxas plastic hub adapters. for the front a complete axle replacment to the new SC10RS live axles, caster blocks, etc. Seeing as my local race scene is kind a mixed bag with the XXX SCB's and other 2WD open wheel cars, I plan on racing it in the same class.
Pictures to follow once I get back to my home PC to post them!

Re: My RC10T project(s)
Finally some pics to add! As you can see it's got the RS front end and SC wheels, which at my local track blend in with the open wheel SC buggies.
Novak GTB system which is STUPID FAST. my ol' 6 gear couldn't hold it, but the stealth does nicely.
Body on it is what I picked up with it on it, in really good shape, very retro

Re: My RC10T project(s)
Hello,
Just checking in after showing the project to a freind. Ended up picking up some shorty batteries for it that I'll be using in the RC10T and RC10.
The Novak 4.5 is way too powerful for the track I'm racing now. Seems the popular motor is a 13.5, so I'll probably be changing that out and the back tires to something softer.
