Custom Works Dominator w/white parts, mini-resto

Post by flipwils11 »

Since picking this up on craigslist last week as part of a misc rc cleanup lot, I've decided to learn a bit more about it and clean'er up and get it running. I'll decide later if I end up selling it.

The roller with wheels/tires is sold to a forum member, I'm working on the other chassis.

New white parts to put on the car.

I'm going to need to patient to find parts apparently. I need steering knuckles and the kingpins that hold them to the front hub carriers. Otherwise it seems very complete and even the white parts it came with cleaned up beautifully with Simple Green and a toothbrush. I installed the new white parts anyway to make it as fresh as I could.

I'll post some pics of my progress, but it's a pretty nice car to work on. Well engineered too in my opinion, no slop, and a neat approach to use the same double wishbone suspension on the front and rear.

I have always loved the Dominator - I remember one of the first times I saw one, tore up the track like no-ones business. It was called Landgraff (if my old mind still works). Killed all the Optimas, Boomerangs & Hot Shots. I dont remember anyone running Yokes, but did see a few Cats once in a while.

One day, I will own one :)

Joey, I'd bet your right. Customworks was started by Jerry and Brian Landgraff (SP?)

Here's a so-so pic of the progress. I only had enough new white arms to do the front 4 so the rears are the originals cleaned up with Simple Green so they're a bit more yellow. Gear bulkheads and rear hub carriers are all brand new white though. Did not take apart the shocks, just cleaned them up as they seem really good actually.

Will need front steering knuckles and stub axles, maybe the one-way bearings too, and the motor plate has a crack in one of the screw mounts so I should replace that.

This thing although well engineered is quite crude! No differentials? No slipper? Damn....

They are a dirt oval monster. I do remember diffs though (sure I can be corrected), but no slipper, "loose" chain and rocket ships. This was back in the day of a 15T being a "hot" motor, with 6 cell 1400 SCRs too. I can only imagine one today with lipo/brushless.

You could run diffs, (Raborn made some great ones) but mostly just one ways up front and spools- especially on foams.
I might have the parts your looking for as well-

Thanks guys, I'll let you know what turns up. I already have an offer from someone on here depending on what he finds in his parts stash and Kipp and kippshobbies got back to me that Custom Works has a lot of this available. So I may be able to source what I need quickly here.

I have some stuff coming that I got on fleabay so I'll post pics of that lot when it arrives.

Custom Works made a ball diff for the dominator but they weren't too popular.

What color are your dog bones (black or gold)?

For my own curiosity what's the difference?

The gold colored dogbones were made earlier than the black dogbones. I'll dig through my box fo dominator/SRP parts tonight and look but I believe all the gold dogbones were in the CW yellow labelled packages.

Mine are gold, but weren't in a pkg. That's why I was curious. Thanks :D
BTW Adam, that looks to be cleaning up pretty nicely. There are tons of options for bodies. 8)

Bare metal from what I can tell and black.
