Help with ID and I would like some advice

Post by Los Humungos »

Hello friends

The other day I finally dug out a couple of my old RC cars. I wated to fix them up for my son to run. Looking to find parts for the cars, my search led here.

My recollection of this buggy is that it is a Yokomo Special Edition. Here is where my memory fades. I know it has some Hot Trick parts on it, but... I do not know.

Here are my questions: 1. Can someoe help me ID it? 2. Where can I find parts for it if I want to fix it up? 3. Should I fix it up as a restoration or should I fix it up as a runner and give it to my son.

Thank you all for your anticipated help. It has been a long time since I was last in this hobby. Now my son is of the age where I would likehim to get into the hobby. He is really into it and it has rekindled a fire for me too.

Cheers,
Wally

It is definitely an RPS Yoke SE. Looks like its got an RC10 shocks on it. Best place to find parts would probably be Ebay, Tamiyaclub, and here. If you can even find parts for it. They will def be hard to find, and most likely expensive. I would say to the point it would not be worth fixing it up as a runner for your son. It would probably make a better shelf queen. You could probably spend the same amount on a new car and gear for him as you would buying parts for your Yoke. Just my 02.

Good luck which ever way you go. :)

It has been about 25 years since I bought this car. I got it used back then and it came with the hot trick parts. Does anyone know about these parts? If I were to go through the restore process, is it best to ash can the hot trick parts to get the yok to its truest form. The car is actually in great shape just to me it appears that it was put together by its owners (including me) with spare parts. I guess I have to figure out, 1 what is yokomo, 2. what is hot trick, and 3 what is kit bashed.

Giving it to my son is out. This car seems too neat and my son is perfectly content with the old basher Grasshopper.

Thanks for the help and input.

Cheers,
Wally

Well, the RPS cars are great vintage cars, and worth quite allot in good condition. However, the Hot trick stuff is worthless for anything other than a shelfer (fragile, and poorly designed). I think you could find allot of enjoyment rebuilding it with original parts, or good hop-ups. Just please don't make it a basher as these cars are a little on the rare side for that. Sell it to one of the members here (or trade it for what you might be looking for). If you are looking for a good runner/basher get something more modern as you will be able to easily find parts for it. -Jeff

Certainly a cool (if ugly looking) car 8)

I say have some fun with re-building & cleaning it up using all the parts as it stands now, fit one of MrLexan's shells (RC10Talk member) & enjoy it sitting pretty on the shelf 8)

P.S; you don't per chance have the contents of the box that it is sitting on??? :P

I'm sorry but I gotta agree with Dan. The Yokohama 834 (and variants) may have it's fans & a great heritage, but has to be one of the klunkiest-looking cars I've ever seen. :?

I'm not gonna tell what I'd do: that's no good to you anyway ;)
But I'd like to suggest to leave those red parts on, as-well as the (home-made?) fiberglass chassis. They may not have been the greatest parts for racing, but they do make your car step out of the crowd of 'all-original' restorations.

And please don't put on the fuggly RPS body; the original 834A looks way better:

Thank you for the input everyone.

I got this car about 25 years ago in a trade. I got it just as I was getting less interested in rc cars and more interested in girls. :-) Even at that time the LHS did not have parts for this car, so I gave up looking. Thus, this car did not ever get in working under my watch. Good and bad. Bad in that I never got any play value out of it, good in that it is in fairly nice shape since it was not used too much. That is one reason I thought it might be a good restore project. The other reason is that I always thought that I "owed" this car to get it into working order. This Yokomo was the "bees knees" most expensive car at the LHS growing up.

I kind of like the ideas of just using what I have and going forward with that. Reengineering that front end to the mono shock again wuld be difficult I think. Tires and a body are what should be in order first in that regard. What is the proper body I should look for? Tires too.

The fiberglass frame is not original? That is suprising. I have also seen some pics of a similar looking car (one that had dual shocks in the front) on ebay with parts similar tothe red "hot trick" parts on mine (they were not red though) and the car was touted as being an original Losi SE.

Once again, thank ou for your help.

SE stands for Special Edition. It is possible that the chassis is part of that edition indeed. There's other people around here who are more knowledgeable on that point.
The RPS SE (Ranch Pit Stop Special Edition) body is available on ebay as a reproduction. I just don't like the looks of it
