What to do when you can't get motivated to finish a build?

Post by RC104ever »

I've been working on my Tamiya HotShot re-re and I think I'm about halfway done. Problem is, I've kind of gotten into a bit of a funk with RC. Just don't feel like doing anything with it right now. I still like reading about what you guys are doing and stuff but I've just gotten so LAZY with my own stuff. Feels like there is too much to do and it will never end.

I stare at the mountains of parts and the still unbuilt kits and wonder if I will ever get it done.

Honestly thought of selling off a bunch of stuff but then I catch myself and say 'Are you freaking insane? Don't you remember how long it took to get all this stuff?'

Anyways, I know you guys will understand. I just have to push through and finish the HotShot and get it running and that will rekindle my love affair again but man is it hard to get motivated!

Is there a support group for this stuff? RC Anonymous perhaps?

You may need a break. We all take one, myself included. It'll come back, so no need to worry Chris

In times like these it's best to just store them in a box until you get the motivation to resume. Last weekend I finally finished a Tamiya Tamtech Ferrari GTO build that stopped 6 years when I got to the point in the chassis build where I would need the specially sized servo that I didn't have at the time. Just be patient and you'll get the RC bug again.

I know. I just hate seeing it just sit there and the wife complains about the mess, blah blah blah

This might be a good time to clean, organize, get rid of all the distractions of other parts and cars. If you're thinking of selling you won't mind putting them away out of sight. I'm sure the wife will be happy too.

I find this is usually a good time to re-focus and prioritize things. Make a plan and chip away at it.

I for one hate unfinished projects sitting around, so I tend to focus on the easy to finish projects and try to finish them, while still keeping an eye out for those harder to find items for the bigger projects. This in turn makes those bigger projects easier when they come around.

The problem I've run into when I do that is I go 'oh hey, I could use this for this other project' or 'hey I was looking for that piece' and it just snowballs out of control. I'm pretty good about where the stuff is located right now but just feel kind of defeated. Got a few runners still going, my T4 (which had been an absolute champ) needs to have a new motor put in it (overheated it at the beach doing donuts, lol), etc etc.

I think I've just gotten lazy in my old age. I want someone to come over and build it all to my specs for me

I get the same way, mostly because my builds run into so many obstacles, needing oddball parts to be sourced or fabricated, and my budget always restricting progress...during those down-times, I decide that I can't just leave my work area a complete mess, so I clean everything up and put stuff away neatly in Ziploc bags & boxes. Once everything is cleaned and stored away, it takes a real effort to break out of that funk, take everything out and continue working on the build.

But rest assured, you're probably just like me, once you unpack the parts and break out the tools, you'll get sucked right back into the hobby. 8)

I just think about how long it usually takes scr8p to finish a build, then I don't feel so bad.

I usually like to get all the parts I need together in order to start a build since I hate having something partially finished. That's why I never have progress pics of my builds since I'm in a hurry to get it done.

I have a couple of project that have been around for 3-4 years now and I can't bring my slews to finish them. All of the parts are there, but no... so I know the feeling.

I have a B44.3 new in package lying here since 2 or 3 months !? lol But I've been working on other projects all this time...

I should build it near future because the weather is being pretty good over here and the outdoor season has started

I know this feeling with other projects: my T2 Pavidis, my TC3, B3 and an Optima Mid...lying around for a few years now

So many thoughts in this thread similar to my own.... so many projects, so much embarrassment

My biggest issue is ball diffs.... I have about six or more projects that will probably require building or rebuilding of diffs (B2 and B3, Schumacher buggies, trucks and tourers), and I really don't want to....... :?

Of course, I should get off my (_|_) and rebuild some diffs....... but I can't see it happening!!!

^^^ This right here..... I have so many projects in parts, neatly stored in boxes, crates, plastic bags..... who wants to get them all out and dirty everything up again????? Not to mention all the cleaning involved in any of the dozen or so nitro projects I have.....

On top of all that, the man cave / hobby room / toy room / dungeon needs a complete rearrangement, as I just got a new desk for it.... which I put in the room without making room for it first, so I can only just get in the door, and there's no room to move!!! Just another little thing that needs doing..... *sigh*...

Here's what I have to still build:

Tamiya M05 Golf (new in box). Have a Team Blue Groove Golf shell that I'm going to paint so I can run it. Also bought a CRX shell too.
Tamiya HotShot rere (half built roughly)
Tamiya Sand Scorcher. Runs perfectly and everything. Has a box art body that is so nice I'm afraid to run it. Have a second parts car / roller with a shell that I could use to bash with I suppose.
RC10 Worlds rere (second kit) still new in box. May leave it like that for awhile
RC10T roller x2. Bought here, both are great shape but need motors and electronics to get going. Not much but still, just sitting there. Both need new shells though.
RC10 runner#1 - runs and works but it needs some TLC to get the tuning / setup right.
RC10 runner#2 - same as #1 but I think its fine overall for a runner. Not sure if I could race with it. I do have a better wing setup for it but haven't installed it.
RC10 T4 - Needs a new motor installed. I have another ESC to put in it too but otherwise its good to go
RC10 B44 - If memory serves, this was ready to go
RC10B5M - Runs and everything is good
RC10 Worlds Car rere - Runs and everything is good
RC10 Graphite - just a bare chassis, with tons of original NIP parts for it. Just never got around to putting it together yet.
RC10 original shelfer (Edinger). Tons of original parts, some rere, but haven't gotten around to putting it together
RC10 TC3 - Roller, with a new shell and some spares. Haven't put it together yet
HPI Pro3 - running, but needs a new spur gear
HPI Pro2 - running, but need a new spur gear

I think that's it. Most of the stuff on the cars is small stuff and I'm sure I'll bang it off and get the cars that are mostly whole going one day all at once.

But I got my real cars that need attention and also need to do the other 'honey do' list stuff. Ah well. Thanks for the support guys! I guess this IS RC Addicts Anonymous
