My first attempt with an air brush

I thought I'd start with something easy for my first attempt with an air brush. The Dyna Storm was perfect for the job!

I used liquid mask and Faskolor water based paint. The air brush was used for the liquid mask. It took about four good coats to build up enough to allow for a good score and peel. Maybe I'll try brushing next time to see the difference...

I didn't want to spend extra money for a hobby compressor, so I just used my shop compressor at 50 psi...

I can't imagine ever rattle canning a body again! Water based paint with an air brush was awesome! No nasty vapor, easy cleanup, and much easier to navigate the inner angles of the body with a small air brush.

Nice, how durable is the Faskolor paint, does it scratch easy?

It will scratch if you try hard enough. I backed mine with a single coat of black poly lacquer to seal it.

I have been wanting to try my hand at airbrushing as well so thanks for posting this, I was curious about the water based paints and how well they adhere to the bodies. Sounds like backing it with something else helps create the bond to seal everything together.

Interested in what airbrush you used as well.

I just used an inexpensive $30 dollar Central Pneumatic airbrush. I didn't want to invest in an expensive brush and compressor until I figured out what I was doing. It's perfect for basic solid-color paint schemes.

Yeah this is cool, been tempted for a while but was put off as I have limited space and adequate ventilation. Water based paints which don't require ventilation? Sounds great!

That is my suggestion too. I got a couple $20 HobbyKing airbrushes and they work just fine for basic paint jobs. What they lack, however, is the fine tip spray controllability that you want for fades or detail work; they clog up too easily, especially with metallics or pearls. I'm going to have to invest in a better-quality airbrush for those detail tasks.
