First body in 20 years and first time with an airbrush. Came out pretty OK

Post by BooGTS »

Going on my Worlds Car or CE for driving at the track. I thought the Charcoal stripes were going to lighter and could have done without them, but overall I like it. Was trying to go for the "Mohito!" of the new Jeep Wrangler JL's.

Try gunmetal instead of charcoal next time?

Yes it did turn out well. What brand of paint did you use?
I've heard that virtually any type of paint can be applied to lexan provided you start with an adhesion promoter if non-poly paint is used.
I've never actually tried it, just gone with paint meant for poly (at least for the initial coat).

That was with Parma Faspearl in Key Lime which is Lexan paint, BUT I used a transparent base (will get the brand/type when I get home). Its going to hurt making holes in that body for the e-clips but its better/easier for a runner I think. I used to use velcro.

Might be interesting to try to paint it the same color as my current Jeep using that base.

I'm going to do another body next using Spaz Stix in a candy gold with mirror paint backing to give it a "gold pan car" look. I may try to get fancier again with masking tape and lines in the future but I kinda like the clean look too.

I'd like to see the candy gold with mirror backing!

I remember following a build from one of the bike builder's websites many years ago where the guy needed to restore some fork parts that were factory gold anodized aluminum. The old originals were badly scratched so, to save time and a few bucks, he tried painting them first. He carefully stripped the old ano, polished the part to a semi-mirror finish and then applied an automotive 2-part urethane gold candy paint (might have been House of Color -- not sure). Anyway, the results were amazing - couldn't distinguish the painted part from the original ano. The only downside is that they would not have been quite a scratch resistant as real ano.
We always refer to our RC10's as "gold pans" but actually I think they are more orange than gold. Real gold ano appears very close to polished brass.
Either way, I say "go for it" as a simulated anodized RC10 body would look awesome.

I got the gold ano paint down. I had to turn down the airbrush a lot. The spatz stix paint is very thin. Didn't get pics though. This week I'll do the mirror backing and finish it up.

The base paint I've been using is Createx Transparent Base. I didn't paint without it, so I can't compare, but I don't have any fish eyes or orange peel.

Its interesting to be sure. I have two more Mirage bodies, but I'm not sure if I want to do another one of those or find something else.

Nice! It looks very close to AE's "gold" ano.
I've always had best results with the airbrush using less air pressure and thinner paint. It will require more coats to completely cover and provide the opacity your looking for however.
