Just had a read over this thread, cracking resto. Never thought of painting a chassis too! It looks as good as new.

Filled gaps and holes with jb weld. Sanded it it all smooth. Painted it with black rustoleum or equivalent spray balm and cleared it with cheap automotive clearcoat from ebay.
