The ads popping up is a lot more concerning. Sounds like you might have picked up a virus or malware, and none of us can really help you with that. I use AVast Antivirus (http://www.avast.com) and MalwareBytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org) to remove most of that crap, and TDSSKiller to scan for rootkits (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip).

Hopefully that should cripple the malware enough that your computer will work better. There's a lot more things I do as a technician before & after those steps, but you need to know in which hidden & system folders to look for suspicious things, as well as work with the Registry Software and Wow32Node and Run keys--not recommended for the layman. :)

If you can read this, hit Ctrl and scroll your mouse wheel up.

I think that might be a setting for your touchpad. Current touchpads let you do more functions than just move the mouse pointer around. They usually let you scroll up/down if you slide your finger up/down along the right edge, or on other ones, you can scroll by pressing 2 fingertips to the touchpad and move up/down. Some also let you zoom in and out. And possibly the most irritating feature of most touchpads is the tapping, which allows you to do a "double-click" or a "select" by tapping the pad. I wish I had a buck for every time someone has "lost" a folder or file or opened something they didn't intend to, by trying to move their mouse pointer but pressing too hard invokes a "select" or "double-click"...I'd be able to afford all the Tecnacraft wheels I wanted!

When a touchpad goes into one of these "something other than mouse pointer movement" modes, the mouse pointer changes to another pointer, like a circle or scrollbar or something. That might be what you're describing?

Anyway, you can modify the various touchpad features by going into the Control Panel for Pointer Options.

Don, does that lappy have a webcam? Usually even the inexpensive ones do. If so, you can use it to take pics. Not the most convenient way, but any port in a storm.
