Question about 3300kv vs 3800kv for RC10T4.3

Post by superticky »

Hello everyone!

I know this is a forum for mostly vintage rc10 but maybe one of you professional experts could help me ?

I have a (maybe) simple question: a few months ago I bought a Team Associated 1/10 2WD RC10T4.3 stadium truck and still enjoying it a lot!
Only modification I had to do was to change the pinion from 18T to 23T to get a speed bump from 23mph to 28 mph with 2S. (I have some previous posts here about it)

A friend is offering me for free a spare but brand new Castle creations 1410 sensorless 3800kv motor (just motor, no ESC) since I have a 1/10 scale 2wd light car which matches the sweet spot of this motor.

Question is: can I and should I try this motor on my T4.3 using the same ESC? In case yes what would be the benefits? Should I change gearing?

Current motor is: Reedy 540-SL4 Sensorless Brushless Motor 3300kv

I’m not sure the impact a 3800 would have over a 3300 in my car, esc and gearing.

Current ESC is supposed to handle the castle 3800kv since the specs are:
Reedy SC600-BL Sensorless Brushless ESC. Motor Limit with 2S LiPo 3900kV

My current gearing with the 3300kv is 23T 87 and I get max 28mph. Motor still warm, not hot except when there is thick dirt or short grass. Hot but still touchable with hands.
Is it worth the trouble?

Thank you guys!

if you are getting it for free, sure why not. I don't think it will be much different, but maybe it's a little bit better?

I think that's a 4 pole motor..its gonna be way faster if that's the case...check your esc specs

they are both 4 pole , esc says with 2s lipo it can handle up to 3900kv

so at this point the only differences are 3300kv vs 3800kv and reedy brand vs castle creations brand ?

Thank you for any help provided !

I think you're going to have to bolt them in and see the difference for yourself here. They are very close on the numbers. Brand, type, and condition of the motors will all have an affect on which one is faster in the end. To be honest, 28 mph seems slow for a brushless setup. Up until a few months back, I was racing a T4.2 Factory Team Edition Truck which is pretty close to what you have there, and it was lightning fast. I would experiment with motors and gearing to get the most performance. I was using the Team Associated sensorless RTR esc and a 5200kv no name motor from ebay that cost less than $20 and it was a track terror with way more horsepower than I could ever use. Also, it never got close to being hot.

If I remember correctly, the 1410 3800kv is physically a bigger motor. It would be the equivalent to a 550 sized motor. These were designed for heavier vehicles (short course), generating more torque to get the truck off the line. You could probably gear the 3800 higher and still have the motor run cool. I agree with Basher, try it out and see which one you like better. Remember start low on gearing and work up, checking ESC and motor temps. Let us know the results.

Speaking of ESC and motor temps. Mind, I'm just getting back into r/c after a 23 yr hiatus. I assume the most practical way to check temps is with an infrared laser temp gun? And what is a safe temp range the ECS and motor should be in for each, and/or what temps should each not exceed?

Yes, the infrared guns are the easiest to use. If you have a specific manufacturer, check their website and/or manuals to see what they recommend. Each manufacturer has different temps and can range from 150-200. I personally don't like to exceed 150-160.
