Period correct ESC

I’m searching for a period correct ESC for my mid Edinger shelf queen. What models were popular back then?

The logical choice would be the Novak1 (NESC-1) also probably the most sold speed control of the time, and therefore easiest to find.

There are other options, but they are harder to find, and dependent on what part of the world you want to represent:

Delta autodrive 2 (very rare!)
Tekin mospower controller

Demon 2DH (UK only)

I purchased & raced my RC10 sometime during 1985 I believe (my timelines are only a rough guide as I'm only going from memory) originally with the kit MSC & Futaba 132H servo. During that time I got my first ESC which was a Futaba MC108.

I then purchased the first Schumacher CAT (SWB) and a friend bought a PB mini Mustang at the same time. These two cars were new out (no such thing as an XL) so I believe this was during 1986. I changed the ESC in the CAT with a Demon King esc, again these were new out but this could have been 87 or early 88.

I don't ever remember seeing anyone here in the UK between 85 & 87 with a Novak, I'd only seen them in magazine adverts .

I don't remember seeing a any US speed controls in the UK until at least 1988. From 1985 thru 1988 the only speed controls available where those locally manufactured: Demon, Laser, Intronics and a few others.

Yeah, same here and I stopped racing in late 88. I remember Laser speed controllers being used quite a bit but can't say Intronics rings a bell. Do you have any pictures of old Laser or Intronics speed controls?

The Intronics speed controls where made by David Spashett’s father. They came in a translucent blue heatshrink.

The laser speed controls where made by Glyn Peglar, whom at the time was more well known for his matched batteries.

I have two Laser speed controls, one is a very early Forward and reverse with power transistor braking, probably from around 1985.

Here in a RC12L.

The other is a forward only from around 1989, dating them is very hard since they where all very similar, and the FETS had the numbers sanded off.

Here in a RC10.

The Intronics speed controls where made by David Spashett’s father. They came in a translucent blue heatshrink.

The laser speed controls where made by Glyn Peglar, whom at the time was more well known for his matched batteries.

That car has some history. I used to race at Club Heathrow in Hanworth. That car is Geoff Wilsons old car with all his original electrics (except the servo which is the correct (futaba s132h) but not original.
Geoff was the club secretary and a well known racer, whom always had time to help anyone.
Ironically I started racing 1/12th with an alpha track parts omega I bought from Geoff when he got the RC12L in early 1987.
The car is pretty much the same as it was the last time I saw Geoff at the Watford Nationals in 1988.

I think Intronics also sold the Corally cars and that might be the reason Davis Spashett was running these cars.

Regarding Laser speed controls, those could be seen also at Schumacher cars. I have seen several photos at magazines were the ESC was noted as Schumacher ESC but in reality it was a Laser. Schumacher had ESC's but Glyn Peglars's ESC look different.

There might be other choices but a Novak Nesc-1 or 4 would be matching best, because Novak was used by the AE team.
The NESC-4 is just the budget version of the NESC-1. Cheaper FET transistors were used, maybe also thinner wires. Electronics such be the same.
