TrackMaster Equalizer

Post by LTO_Dave »

I AM THE TRACKMASTER MASTER!

I've been after one of these cars for quite a while, and Phin recently sent me an auction link to one. It was assembled but never ran, which is exactly what I was looking for other than a NIB kit. It came with a nicely painted Corvette wedge, but I have other plans for a body.

I spent an entire day tearing it down and cleaning every single part, and applying some TrackMaster decals. Both sway bars were rusty and I can't remove them from their mounts to polish them, so I just removed them since the car looks much cleaner without them. I removed the foams and glue from the wheels today with a quick acetone bath.

The shocks are a really unique design that I've never seen before. They're internally sprung and have one thick o-ring/seal under the piston. It uses RC10 rear hub carriers with CSC 1/4" sliders.

Shocks are built a lot like the old deltas, pressurized. Very cool!

Either a Protoform L.D. Vortex Wedge or a Premier Bat Wedge...or maybe a Bloomquist wedge. I also have a Pro-Line Winning Wedge but I just doesn't look right on the car.

Premier Vortex wedge would look killer on there (never like the bat wedge)

Bat Wedge was a weird body, I've got one NIP.

Was it popular back in the day?

Yes, the Bat Wedges were popular back in the day and some people claim it led to the downfall of dirt oval racing. (Just one of the many reasons). I have always been amazed at thin (.010"-.015") the lexan was on Premier bodies and how people lightly misted them with spray paint to save weight.

I really dig those Winning Wedge bodies but I agree they don't have that pro-level, engineered to eek out that .01 second, look that the Equalizer deserves. WW would probably be more suited for a Slingshot or a converted buggy.

The thing I love about oval cars of that era is the simplicity. Even today it would be hard to beat them.

I don't how you find some of these treasures! So jealous. Now you need a Reflex 10 to set beside it.
