NIB TRX-1....Build it?

Post by TRX-1-3 »

Ok so I was fortunate enough to score an NIB TRX-1 from a member here at a very reasonable price. Thanks. You know who you are.

What do I do with it? I mean when I build it. I already have a from NOS parts shelfer, but building this one to run would be insanity. A race replica from bitd? Not enough intel. Bone stock with box art? Not into that. I could build it just to stop the voices in my head..... I really don't want to rat-hole it either. Selling it is not an option.

What would you dudes do?

Thanks,
Mark
Hope you're doin' something fun.

You already have a shelfer...so no need to retrace your steps. I don't like building the same car over and over again. I might start with the same barebones, but I would do them all differently. Maybe resto-mod it, or build it up with a particular, consistent color scheme in mind...or re-engineer it to be something totally different.

I think you should build it with lots of Factory Works parts! Power Clutch, Steering kit, shock towers, wing mount bullets, battery strap, dogbones....heck we could even put a Lethal Weapon trans in it! oh yea!

I don't think I've ever seen a TRX-1 set up for oval. Hmmm

What about choosing a theme ... like the blue&black version from Lonestar ???
Why not making it a gentle runner ... for vintage meetings  if we you have several spare parts it is not so much risky
Somehow listen to the little voices that are saying " go guy and build it" (pictures are mandatory in that case off course  )

You lucky dog!!!

If you find yourself paralyzed by indecision, I know a guy that'll take it off your hands to ease your pain. :D

I guess it depends on your frame of mind. Are you a collector, a modeler, or a driver?

Maybe you could p!mp-out your existing NOS shelfer with Jeff's goodies and build the NIB as your replacement "pure example" shelfer.

No matter what direction you go, you've got some awesome and rare examples! Congrats, buddy!

Jon

NOOOOO!!! Threads like this are so painful to collectors like me.

You scored a vintage kit that has (against all odds) remained NIB for what could soon be three decades. Instead of cherishing something so incredibly rare, you are wanting to build it? Why?! Right now you have something very special. As soon as you build that car you will have what everyone else has. If you really feel the urge to build another car, then please go buy a nice, used TRX-1 and restore it to like new condition.
Something clever goes here...

Not many of use have the memory of building one from new. I hear what you are saying, though I would build it. In the end no one will care when you are dead that you kept a toy in the box. I love this thread by the way as there have been 5684 (I counted) of them and they all basically go the same way :D

My brother and I got one when they were new. Pre-Blue Eagle kits. Later upgraded it with the newly released Blue Eagle trans. Loved it! A year before that, I got an RTR Traxxas Sledgehammer. I say keep it in the box, and restore one as a previous reply said. I feel you'd cherish it more untouched, IMO.

I think I say pretty much the same thing when these threads come through.

It depends on how much you paid for the NIB and what the valuation means to you. If you purchased it and the price was a 'who cares', build it how you want. If you really had to push yourself to pick it up at that price point, I would not build it. If the box is open, I would for sure open it up and check it out often. It's true that valuation is in the fact that it survived as a new kit untouched for so long. once you put it together, that valuation drops. you have to decide how you feel about that.

I would shy away from making it a 'modified' version, only because: in order to update it with other stuff, that leaves leftover NIB parts still in the box after all is said and done. I'd suggest starting with a partial assembly and building it up piece-meal if that is what you wanted to do.

final note: if you end up wanting to build it, you are gonna wanna boil up all those traxxas nylon parts to help them and hopefully improve any brittleness they may have. I would be surprised if the ball ends don't crack as soon as you try to install the ball. the other parts should be OK after a boil.

Agree with most of the above...

If it's NiB, it's so special because there aren't that many left in that condition - perfect new builds, or almost perfect ones are not abundant, but they aren't that scarce either. As I'm guessing how many built TRX-1's you already have in your stable, maybe I would recommend not doing "yet another one".The moment you build it, it won't be special anymore....

.... BUT if you're dying to build it as you view the building itself it as the ultimate vintage experience, then go for it for sure!

When it comes to hot-rodding it, I would only do this to something that's already been built, and preferably already run, too... Retromodding a NIB kit is a big no-no in my books, but then again, it's your kit, and your decision - whatever floats your boat :!:

If you build it... please post pics for your friends here

And to whoever sold it to Mark... you should have sold it to me instead :x :x :x
