Mini bikes / pit bikes

Post by romulus22 »

Anyone else play with these?

For the same reason I'm on this website, I'm getting the things my family couldn't afford to give me as a kid. My first one I got was an 86' Z50 I found half buried under leaves and trees in my friends back yard. He gave me this in 02' and I just resurrected it a couple years ago with a China 125cc and some newer parts that were wore out. Has been a fun little machine to say the least.

After having the 50 and wanting to take it out on the road but not being able to do it legally I picked up a project 71' CT70 with original title signed and notarized from the original owner. Been sitting in my closet for months on the back burner due to my dogs cancer treatments taking priority. She has been doing really good and is almost in remission so I decided to pull it out and get started on this again. IDE like to do a full on resto but I like to use my toys and I don't want to worry about tearing it up so its just getting a duplicolor rattle can job and some newer pieces to flash it up a little. It will also get a China 140cc. Here's a picture of the first thin coat of paint I laid down after work. Set the other pieces on just for a visual. Really excited to get this one going so I can ride it to and from work.

Some have asked why not just buy a real bike. I've been there, done that. To me it isn't fun worrying about when I'm going to total very expensive bike. The way I like to ride its not if, its when. This was a few years ago at Putnam Park. Had a blast but got out before it was too late and I was left with a pile of parts.

I have been throwing around the idea of building a small bike. A good friend of mine has a a nice track he built behind his house for small bikes. He has a yz80 and his roommate has a dr(?) 125 four stroke that they ride every day. The have been bugging me to get something to ride for years. Problem is there track just isn't big enough for a full size bike, and I am too big for a little bike. I have been thinking about getting a dr125 or similar and stuffing a 125 two stroke in it. But, my true love has always been quads, have owned several, but not in many years. I just can't bring myself to spend the money building a custom small bike when I really want a big bad quad. But, if I got a quad I wouldn't be able to ride their track.

I enjoy big dirtbikes, had a CR 125 out of high school but lacked the space to ride and the transportation to take it places. Should have bought a truck but still had no where to take it. The 50 fits in the trunk of my Civic nicely and I ride mine with a coworker who has one around where he lives.

Z50 looks good but why not keep the original 50 in it! I feel the Chinese 125 is desecration!

In a way yes it is but there is no way a 50cc engine would keep me happy. The 50 that it originally had in it was seized and then left in my friends yard to die. These Chinese motors are a great bang for their buck compared to building a honda stroker kit that is still only a 3spd auto clutch. Right now its s little over geared so its pulls pretty slow in 4th but I've managed 67 mph on my GPS.

Bitd, before they were cool- and before you could buy them at the local auto parts store, I saw a pic in car action of a racer riding a pocket bike. It got me interested and I ended up buying a couple Polini's. one was a 7 and one a 12hp iirc. I was 200 pounds and if I got greedy with the throttle it would buck me off no problem  pretty insane little 50cc water cooled bikes. Nothin like the cheap crap sold at Kmart, these were a serious race bike. The cheap one was $1800, the big one was around 2400. I would encourage anyone that hasn't ridden a proper pocket bike to try one out. A good friend races motocross and it showed him something, probably still has the scar

I know you said pit bike but this is the closest I have had to a pit bike. Next closest was a YSR-50 but I never got to ride it

I had a friend with a cheap china pocket bike. Really wanted a nice one like you described but after riding his I lost interest. Too small and I'm a pretty normal sized guy. IDE love to ride one like you had but I don't think I could bring myself to buy one.

Made a little progress on the CT this weekend. At a stopping point till I order some parts. Couldn't remember what all was useable from the original purchase till I started working on it again. It's no show stopper but it looks good for a rattle can paintjob.

Funny...yesterday while driving to pick up some pizza, I saw a guy riding a pocket-bike down a lengthy alley near where I live. I'm sorry but you just can't look cool riding one of those. Hands groping the bars between your legs, your knees splayed out to the sides like a hooker ready to play leapfrog...maybe I'm just too self-conscious but it looks retarded. :P

That's what's cool about the honda 50's, not too small but still small enough to fit in the trunk of my Civic. And big enough to play around on.
