What belt drive trans is this?

Is there any advantage to belt drive transmissions aside from being quieter? Although cool they seem like a power robbing device to me. What am I missing?

Once they're broken in they're pretty good, but still less efficient than a 3 gear transmission. That being said, with brushless motors and LiPo's, it's become a non-issue.

Belts are more efficient than gears but are more expensive and add a little more complexity in design because belts are finicky about getting the tension right.

They're still used often in modern RC cars running brushless + lipo......just more so in on-road touring cars than in off-road buggies.


Plus, manufacturers don't really go out on limbs and make zany aftermarket parts for RCs anymore.

I used to design belt and chain systems up to 2200 hp for mud pump applications in oil drilling and I can tell you with absolute certainty that a belt is not more efficient than a gear. The old belt drives were however an improvement from the original 6 gear setup and also offered an easy way to get a slipper installed. Once the stealth boxes came out, belt and chain drive went away pretty quickly. I'm shocked to see belts still used in 4wd and onroad. I did love belt drives though! I still have my Bullet Powerglide.
