I removed a set of tires from rims recently using the oven method. Stunk the house up real good, but got the tires off nicely preserved

A procedure I do NOT recommend

Carefully pour acetone into a disposable plastic cup until about 1/3 full. Not too full, you don't want to spill or waste anything...
Take old toothbrush that you've already used to clean parts and scrub it in acetone to remove any residual grease
Smile to self as grease comes off easily - wow, acetone works great!
Smile fades as you notice weird gooey stuff building up on toothbrush - realize it is the cup rapidly dissolving
Swear loudly as you run into house looking for a glass jar that you should have used in step 1.
Attempt to pour contents of plastic cup into glass jar - realize plastic cup is mysteriously empty
Notice that plastic cup is no longer attached to it's bottom
Observe pool of acetone spreading across table - now melting toothbrush and nearby screwdriver handle
Swear some more
Grab paper towels and clean up big mess
Throw everything away

How long did you have the rubber contained in the fume bag?

The story about the disposable plastic cup melting was also disappointing...I've only ever used empty margarine or yogurt containers, I've had acetone in those for several days, never had those melt. Maybe because the chemicals in yogurt & margarine are worse than acetone.

Approximately 12 hours. One tire is unusable and both are kind of a chalky color now. I'm sure it is due to the type of rubber used but dang.....still sucks

yeah you have to watch the older tire blends, they sometimes had more plastic than rubber. if they are true rubber, they are fine.

as for the container, you should always use something like polyethylene, or polypropylene (on the little recycle triangle, you will see PP or PE noted somewhere). Polystyrene, which is probably what you used, turns into a gooey mess. also does that with gasoline.

I had an engine I was building one time, and needed to prime the carb; it was a holley, you can fill the bowls with the vent tubes, just need a good small funnel. I usually grab a discarded spray paint can cap as a small container to fill, but this time, I grabbed an old cup that was sitting there, one of those milky translucent 8 oz kitchen cups. poured some gas in, turned around, went to pick it up and the whole thing was starting to sag. ugh.

when making composites and using a foam core as a plug, guys use polystyrene foam, and when the composite is hardened, they pour acetone on the foam to melt it out of the mold.

figured id chime in on this thread as im trying to de glue some tires at moment. went the easy way and just got some hobby town brand debonder since my LHS had it. well, after a full bottle of it. i can say I got 1 of the 4 tires I was using it on debonded, well sorta.

going to visit a hardware store tomorrow and see if they have anything before I resort to ordering online.

I have had repeated success in removing old CA glue from tyres, wheels, a Losi Jr. 2/T molded chassis and a JRX2 graphite chassis using the heptane based de-bonder. It's take a little time and some patience but the effort really does pay off. Once done, a quick wipe down with some IPA and then hot soapy water and you're good to go....

I'd be ok with this, as long as the rims are still usable. I hate buying a new set of rims every time I buy tires. One reason I bought beadlocks for my Traxxas Slash.
